I believe it was this past November I had an MRI and found out that I've got 3 herniated discs. The doctor told me to lose weight, which I wasn't really over weight and now have gained 7 pounds. He also told me to get into a warm pool for water therapy. Well, it costs nearly $12 every time I'd like to go to the spa so I've only gone 2 or 3 times. We were able to buy an inversion table and that helps. Does anyone else have an inversion table and use it? The doctor said to use it twice a day for 15 minutes, but I can't handle it that long, probably 5 minutes. It's been months now and I'm starting to get flabby and sad. I'm only 39 years old. Any advice out there? I was jogging and riding a mountain bike working out a few times a week and now I feel fat and flabby! Also have terrible insomnia probably from lack of exercise!

I work for a chiropractor and I see him fix this all the time. It's absolutely worth looking into!!! If you'd like, you can pm me and I'll help you find a good one in your area. All of the ones I have ever dealt with worked with me financially since I don't have insurance (and I don't have insurance because I don't have $$$$). If you do have insurance, most plans pay for chiropractic care. He/she could also show you some stretching that would be good for you and also help tone back up. (I'm an old grandma and I'm in the best shape/health of my life!) Also, at www.deflame.com there's a lot of information about ridding your body of inflammation. That should help a lot. Ice instead of heat decreases inflammation.

I live in Mexico and actually a chiropractor/surgeon helped me a lot in the beginning. He's the one who sent me for an MRI. I found the inversion table to help more than chiropractics.

In any case, I would be careful about being treated by a chiropractor with 3 herniated discs. My chiropractor would probably not touch you. Are you an American citizen living in Mexico? There are a number of treatments available for herniated discs that weren't available years ago. It might be worthwhile to investigate them.

Thanks Larry, I think the inversion table and swimming are the best. Yes, I'm a US citizen living in Mexico and there are some 'treatments' available here, but besides traction of some sort, I don't know what could be better. On the inversion table you're hanging upside down in perfect alignment; a form of traction for those discs. At Christmas, I went to see a chiro in the states and he didn't do too much but he did recommend this inversion table. I had taken a hard copy of my MRI. In my favor is my age, 39. I'm still young enough to heal w/out surgery, says my Mexican dr. I am better than I was but I know I'm not perfect. I was really curious if there are any recumbent bike users here. Stationary or mobile.

I don't know much about the inversion table but it sounds like there are possibilities to me. Given your age, you might be one of those people who has just had bad luck. I'm 53 and have never had any herniated discs. Did you play any rough sports that might have resulting in your current condition? Anyway, here in the states I heard of a procedure where there is material placed where the collapsing disks are. You might not be a candidate for it until you become old. BTW, I certainly agree with the advice about avoiding surgery if you can help it.

I'm crazy! I took a bad fall at 19 learning how to snow ski. Had a really bad crash on a quad and defiantly did some damage about 7-8 years ago but didn't know the extent as I didn't have any x rays done. I recovered and took up mountain biking. I was doing fairly well. Didn't know about these discs until riding my mountain bike and was jogging last fall. One disc may be herniated from lifting. I'm tall. 5' 7.5" and am always bending, lifting or at one time shoveled rocks in the yard!!!!!!! LOL I love life!

It's quite possible that the initial damage was not noticeable except to an expert on x-rays. But I am no expert either, I just read a lot. In any event, your current condition may be the result of 7-8 years of progressive disk degeneration. Probably a good doctor could tell if the damage is progress or not. I suppose only x-rays taken prior to the accident could determine if your spine was in good shape originally. I have had lots of back pain but I have been assured that I have no disk involvement. I do have some minor scoliosis that is difficult to detect. I didn't believe the doctors when I was told my pelvis wasn't level. A chiropractor finally told me that it was scoliosis and it all made sense. An average person can probably see it if they are told were to look. I can feel it.

Yes Larry, unfortunately I have a bit of the scoliosis going too. After writing about it, I feel pretty good about myself and what I've been able to accomplish. I used to have a hard time understanding chronic pain. I get tired easier than I used to and I know it's a result of the playing and working hard. At least I had fun doing it!

Where are the herniated discs? Are they causing any symptoms? A significant proportion of people, both with and without back pain, have disc herniations. In many cases the pain is caused by something else entirely, such as chronic muscle strains. Maybe you would feel better if you gradually eased back into a more active lifestyle.
