Beginning June 15th, AA is going to begin charging $15.00 for the 1st piece of checked luggage. http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080521/american_airlines_reductions.html?.v=5 this is really crazy. now, i know that fuel prices are sky high, but instead of this ridiculous charge, wouldn't it have been better to just raise the price of the tickets by $30.00. we would never have known this was going on. seriously. i will no longer be flying american. hope they are happy with themselves.

Well, can't afford to fly, can't afford to drive. Guess I'll have to stay home.

Been in the airline biz 20 years now...aviation itself 30...I feel we need reregulation in the industry. I come at that from a safety standpoint.

Yeah, we can thank Saint Ronald on this one. There are too many airlines flying too many of the same routes and they all lose money and stay behind schedule. The FAA could borrow some ideas from the FCC and limit some of the overlaps so that planes would be used more efficiently. Doesn't mean prices will be cheaper, but it might stabilize the few airlines that can survive and make flying a bit more predictable.

I obviously can't say which airline I work for etc... but one example is let's say I have a flight ready to depart a certain city..not a hub airport, but one that does get some traffic, say like Sioux Falls (which we don't serve, so I'll use it) and some bad thunderstorms develop on the route of flight that departs in 10 minutes or so. Now this is the afternoon push which has 3 or 4 flights all at once, and none till the overnighters come in at 8 to9 pm or so. Airlines have been cutting staff terribly to save money, so all 4 agents are outdoors working the airplanes and hustling (for peanuts btw....don't get me started on execs who get bonuses while pensions are cut and airlines are run into bankruptcy) and nobody is watching the phones when I'm phoning to tell them to take on more fuel to weave around the storms, holding etc.....I can phone the local control tower, but it isn't their job to be a go between for the flight and the company (me) and they have no info on the weather 400 miles away. Thats happened more than a few times and for worse things too.... We need the reregulation to enforce safety not so much cut down the number of airlines. I can guarantee you if we had only 3 arilines in this country starting today, one would be in Chapter 11 in two years. If the consumer demands 199 bucks coast to coast, they will get a very poor product.

They don't mention if it's mainline flying only or the commuter subsidiaries also. That can be key, as far as making plans.

We actually did that with most of our stuff when we went on a two-week trip a few years ago. Just boxed it up, sent it so it arrived the day after we did, then shipped it home a day before departure. It was great.

There are express services for folks to send their vacation belongings ahead and have them delivered to their accomodations the day they arrive. But it is spendy.

Hmmmm....I think this is what I will do in the future. Rather than pay AA $15 to destroy my luggage, have my belongings pawed through by security and stand on line waiting to see if my bags came on the same flight I did...

In the end, the $15 is getting tacked on somewhere anyway, either on the original ticket cost or the luggage, so for my pocketbook, it's all the same. But, I do agree that it will cause people to heavily overload on the carry-on luggage, and that won't be fun when it comes to boarding and deplaning. I'll still patronize American because it is the only airline I have ever flown on that has never misplaced my luggage, even for a few hours. I just bought airline tickets through them a couple of weeks ago before they had this policy in place. But, if my luggage arrives when I do as it always has with them, and it isn't too huge of a fiasco boarding/deplaning, I'll fly with them again and happily pay the $15 separately.

Unfortunately this is a sign of the current time and the voltility of fuel prices. We've all felt the pain at the pump and American Airlines is no different. They could keep absorbing the cost and go belly up leaving us with one less airline. I know I am flying Alaskan Airlines in 2 monthes. Our tickets were dirt cheap. They haven't instituted any surcharge as far as I know but I am ready to pay when I get there. I hope the airlines put their clout behind that of the American people and put some pressure on the government to pressure the oil companies to stop manipulating supply to drive up the cost of oil!

True, it can be pricey. But if you book flights far enough ahead and get a good deal, the peace of mind is worth it. If you've dealt with delayed or lost luggage, the cost of shipping might be OK.

Air travel will revert back to the days when it was only for the wealthy I read an article that said that within 12-18 months, oil will top $200 and may go to $250 a barrel. This will translate to $6.00-7.00 a gallon gas.

On NPR they were talking about the futures traders being the ones causing the prices to skyrocket.
