Sarah - A poll idea Calling your spouse by your child's nickname or talking baby talk? Ever done it? How about to strangers? I've called him Izzy twice now after we've been talking in depth about her. This morning in my errands I walked by a Gymboree in full swing. Stopped in and talked to the manager lady and got some info about 0-6m classes. Once a week 45 minutes of basically mommy and me time. Tummy time, mirror time (looking at other babies), baby massage, and various topics for moms of infants. Any of you been involved with a program like that? As they get older they incorporate more and more physical activity which I like. I had to laugh as I was leaving and they got started with parachute time.

Cool, a new baby thread, I'll bite. We got to bring Gideon home today. He's doing well. A fantastic nurser, what an answer to prayer in that regard! I'm just downloading pics from my camera and will post something on one of the threads soon. :)

Oh wow, Julie I didn't realise you named him yet :) That's great! Sarah just wondering if this could be a baby/toddler chat? I mean we all talk about our kids of all ages here really but I think we feel most comfortable doing it in this folder where we know we can share things like "I was in the shower with 3 yr old today and she noticed my stretchmarks" etc etc?

Just had to carry this over from the other thread: quote:
Ladies, I'm losing my mind. Throughout the day, I will look at Levi, wherever he is, and make a silly noise or face to get him to laugh. Today, I caught myself twice making those noises/faces at the DOG. What may be even worse is what I did last night. One of the ways I say "hi" to Levi is to say "boo!" to get him to giggle. Well, last night as I crawled into bed I said "boo!" to my husband. (hey, can I blame the fact that I was half asleep??) That is TOO funny!!! I'm sooooo glad I'm not the only one that does stuff like this! --Kat

I keep meaning to tell you all...Jack's new thing..started last night. He can now walk unassisted up the stairs to the porch!!! He doesn't have to crawl up like he has been doing for a while now (ok, so I am sure some could do it much earlier then 21mo, but he is still very small and wears 12mo clothes, so he has short legs)

Yeah, you aren't kidding. Over 1300 stolen from our checking account (but thankfully will be returned from the bank eventually) and I locked my child and dog in a very hot car over 20 min. Jadon is crying for "me", but not "really". He ate an hour ago. I worry that I've created a potential disaster because he won't sleep or rest unless he's on or with one of us. He has zero independence. I feel a lot of emotions right now. One is definitely in the family of failure. I wonder - when Can you start weaning your child into his own bed? What are the signs that it'll work?

Janine, I'm so sorry about all you're going through! No one needs that but especially not someone with a newborn. I hope everything works our about your account and with no problems (p.s. have you let the credit report companies know just in case?) and that you don't feel too bad about the car locking incident.

Janine, what a rotten day, don't be so hard on yourself, I haven't done it myself but I almost have locked myself outside the home, luckily I remembered just as I was about to shut the door that I needed the key to get back in (it was winter and I was taking out the garbage). You can try putting Jadon into his bed whenever you want. There is no right or wrong age at all. Its all up to you, Jason and Jadon. He may take a few days or a week to sort of learn how to be alone so you will have to be persistant so if you are going to try something I would try it during the day at naps first and then on the weekend try it at nights (assuming Jason works a normal mon-fri job). That's what I did with Grace. Can you pat him to sleep in your arms and then lay him down in his bed? When you lay him down do you make sure that you keep your hands on him for a second so he doesn't feel you drawing away all of a sudden. And you can either do it two ways, pop him down just as he is drifting and pat or rock him in his bed or you can wait about 15-20 mins (nath only takes about 10) til he is really asleep and then pop him in. There are no signs that it will work because each baby will be different, but what you will find is that he will cry a bit and he may not like it at first or you may find that there is no problem at all, that it just takes you holding him in your arms 5 mins more before you pop him down does the trick. Or you may find that you do have to stay up 20 mins in the middle of the night to get him into his own bed and he sleeps in there a few hours etc. Each one is different, just try a few things and DON'T beat yourself up over anything! And remember its between you, Jason and Jadon.

ORIGINAL: Flintejae I worry that I've created a potential disaster because he won't sleep or rest unless he's on or with one of us. He has zero independence. I feel a lot of emotions right now. One is definitely in the family of failure. Janine, First of all, I will say what you're likely to be told here anyway - that Jadon is a baby, a very young one at that, and he is supposed to be dependent on you and Jason. He is not supposed to be independent yet. Secondly, however he is you haven't "created" anything - he is like he is because that's just how he is. You haven't made him like it. Thirdly, regarding "failure". In this instance, you haven't actually "failed". But in other areas you will, we all do. None of us do everything right. None of us is the perfect parent. You will make life a lot easier for yourself if you try and drop this "must get everything perfect" thing, otherwise you will constantly be setting yourself up for "failing". Parenthood is about trial and error, for all of us. Try and let yourself off the hook. (And btw, you're not failing your baby by letting him feel safe and secure.) Fourthly, I'd like to ask you who this pressure (re Jadon's "zero independence" is coming from - whether it's from yourself or whether it's from other people. If it's from other people, stuff them and carry on doing what feels right to you. Believe in yourself, be confident in yourself, tell other people as little as possible, and choose not to allow what they say to undermine you. If it's from yourself, it might help to stop and think and break it all down into bite-sized chunks. When does it bother you the most that he sleeps/rests with you/Jason? Is it during the day or at night? It will help for you to identify when it bothers you the most, and deal with just one of them (day or night) at a time. If it is during the day, do you know why that is? is it because you just want to be on your own (which is fine), or is that you are feeling frustrated because of things you think you can't do? One immediate option is to ask for help from some of your many friends/family that you have around you. Then you can start to work out a plan for him to gradually learn to sleep by himself during the day (many mums find this starts by choosing to take them out in the stroller a little while after a while, and the baby learning to sleep alone there; the car can also be a good way of helping them learn to sleep on their own); once they've done that, you can try putting them in their cot for just one sleep per day. If it's at night that it bothers you most, you can start putting him down in his cot then either before or after you've rocked him to sleep, try music, staying nearby etc - but personally, I would recommend you waiting another month or so before trying that. It might make all the difference.

Jae, we started putting Chase in the crib when he was 8 weeks old. But before we put him in there at night, we started putting him in there for naps in the daytime, just so he could get used to the space etc. Everyone told me I was going to create habits by letting him sleep on me at nighttime, but it didn't happen that way. It's most likely a stage. If you're the one needing some space, (and I *completely* understand that one!) see if Jason could take some time napping with him. I remember one phase where Chase wouldn't nap unless he was in my lap. For a while I fought it, and then I just made sure I had the remote or some books handy to my chair! It didn't create any habits for us, now, when it's nap time, I put him in his crib and he falls asleep for a nap. Just remember, that he's still really little, and he needs his mommy. It really does get better! Maybe just try putting him in the crib for naps, it may take a few days, but hopefully he'll get used to it. (((Janine))) You're doing a good job, you're a good mom.

No, we do, and my husband used to drive tow truck for AAA and do a lot of unlocks. But...we are in a rural area and it can be 2 hours sometimes before someone can get to you. You can't leave a baby in the car that long. And if you don't have the proper tools to get in without damaging the frame of the car, that's no good either. If you break the seal on the door, it would get awful cold in our cars in the winter. We have just decided that breaking the window out and having our insurance cover it (which they would, with no problem) is the better solution for us. Since we decided that, neither of us has locked them in the car anyway.

2 hours? Yikes! I've never lived more than 2 miles from a village and 7 miles from a town, lol.
