I had to change to bifocals about a year and a half ago. I got progressive lenses. Since I have to wear glasses all the time and not just for reading, I had to just put them on and pray that my eyes adjusted quickly.
For about a month I couldn't go into a grocery store without getting dizzy. One of the things you have to learn is to turn your head to look around and not just your eyes. Just moving my eyes back and forth to see the stuff on the shelves while walking down the aisles would get my head spinning.
The worst was going down steps or stepping off of a curb. The bifocal completely threw off my ability to judge the distance of the step. For awhile I had to hold onto a railing or my hubby and look straight ahead while stepping down.
The weirdest thing was any straight lines like door jams and wall corners were not straight. LOL!!
My eyes did adjust relatively quickly. The lines straightened up and the steps stopped moving away from me. I still can get a bit dizzy in stores if I'm not careful to turn my head not just my eyes. Old habits are hard to break. Now I can just correct myself and go on with my shopping instead of leaving the store before I either fall or throwup.

About a month or so ago the eye doctor put me in them.
He suggested the progressive lens.
I wore them for a couple of days, nearly got in a car wreck (because the sides of the progressive lens make things look weird and you can't judge distances), took them back and am now back in single vision lens.
When I do decide to go to bifocal, I will go with the lined lens and not the progressive.

About 3 years ago. I started off with 2 different pairs of glasses (worked out cheaper for me) and I ended up going crazy switching them all the time.
I got transition lenses then and haven't looked back. I never had a problem getting used to them.

I have worn the progressive lenses for years -- at least ten of them. They did take a little getting used to at first, but now I can't get along without them.
Unfortunately, it's a part of growing older.

I had 20/20 vision until my late 30s when I began to become near-sighted due to 10-12 hours PC programming and using small monitors since the early 80s. The Dr. gave me bifocals but I didn't need them for reading, I mainly needed them for driving. (I still take my glasses off when I get to work.) A couple of years ago I got a pair of progressive & transition lenses. As mentioned, they took a bit of getting used to, but they're fine now.

Have progressive lens with transitions shading. Only problem is trying to read small print.

I wear progressive lenses and have not had a problem.

I've been wearing bifocals for about four years now and hardly think about them anymore (except for now after reading this thread). But my dh started wearing them only a few months ago. A week or so ago I discovered he was changing back to his old glasses to watch TV. I told him he needed to wear his bifocals all the time to train his eyes where to look, but he isn't going to do it. Maybe someday, but right now, he just isn't inclined.

It irritates me. I am at a point at which the opthalmologist, optician, and I discussed whether or not I really needed glasses. They decided that I needed them for reading but not really for driving, although I might see some improvement, so the decision was up to me. I chose to go ahead and get the whole shebang in one pair of glasses, rather than having just reading. Unfortunately, backing is a problem, while using the glasses for rear view mirrors but not a problem for rear-viewing while driving.
I noted the problem because our driveway is long and narrow, and I back into it. I just pass the back corner of the house, then have to zig to head toward my carport, then zag to go into the carport. (My little car will make it, but I can barely get my husband's van to go in there.) Driving this is done using mirrors, not by turning and looking out the back.
I never hit anything, but since I got my glasses, I noticed it was a little more difficult. One day, I took them off and zipped right back. It's the glasses. I guess they just don't work that well for mirrors.

I don't know anyone with them, so can you guys tell me what it's like when you first start wearing them, how long it takes to get used to them, etc. Please?
We're just getting old!
