Please vote for the cover that you feel best fits my book:
The Spanking Room: A Child’s Eye View of the Jehovah’s Witnesses

My goal is simple: To have a cover and title that tells the reader all of the following:
This is a true story of what it was like to grow up as a Jehovah’s Witness with…

A father who says “Jesus is the only way to Salvation”
A mother who says “The Watchtower Society is the only way to Salvation”
And a scared little boy caught in between…

They are both good, but I like the second one a little bit more.

Grass Valley is pretty...... or at least it was when I last visited there about 25 years ago.

i voted #2

the image has has more resonance for me - child, secrets, closed doors (an adult world), door-to-door witnessing, boundaries/ trangressions, spying/ overhearing, and the eye could be a child's but it doesn't have to be a child's eye...

i also think the text sits better -- putting the text in the column on the first one feels a little forced to me (though i'm not a big fan of how the author's name sits - the burgundy with the white blocks - leave it simple)

I'm a #1 fan myself - it's far less cliche than #2. As a graphic designer (and amateur typographer), i'd advise enlarging both the author's name and the title, and possibly stacking it kind of like the text on the left side. See how that works for you. The photo is perfectly dramatic, and the topic is a VERY good one.

Good job!

nm - changed my mind. Sizes of text are good, maybe even layout - but not placement. The "S" in the title needs to line up with the door frame, and the author's name needs to be vertically centered with the "box" that the door makes around it. I think that should do it for you.

Thanks for the input!

I voted, but unless you are 1) self-publishing and 2) finished writing, I don't think designing a book cover is a good use of time...

If you are planning to find a publisher, they will choose the cover; if you aren't finsihed writing, you should be focusing your time/attention there!

Now... if you are both done and planning to self-publish... then I like #1 and agree with Locke's recommendation to try some different layouts with the lettering. You might even just try moving the text to the right slightly so the words are on the flat part of the door only and having THE on its on line and SPANKING ROOM on the next line.

well, let's be fair -- both images could be considered somewhat cliche. the title and content are difficult to illustrate with more straightforward images. then again, more tangential and abstractly associative images may not fly with whatever demographic you're pursuing. i know this may be a bit of a cliche in itself, but you may want to look at what someone like chip kidd does with material like that. i still prefer #2 - it's more ambiguous as to whether the eye is a child's (who's looking at whom?) and the text is more straightforward and less problematic as far as placing. i still don't understand what's happening with the boxes around the author's name.

i would also have to agree with the comment about how this is being published. if you're self-publishing it's one thing, but if someone else is publishing then they will have someone design the cover for you (and hopefully you will get the opportunity for input).

I voted for #2 because I think it looks more like a nonfiction cover.

If it were just a matter of which piece of art I like more, I would pick #1 because it's intriguing. However, since it looks mysterious it gives the impression of being the cover for a fiction book--maybe a mystery or a thriller--so considering the topic I'd say #2 is more appropriate.

I voted number 1.

As far as images though, I think the child's face conveys more emotion than some obscure eyeball.

And the text on number 1 is much better.

I guess #1 is more intriguing. If I were browsing in a bookstore I would pick up #1 quicker than #2.

But regardless of which one you use, you need to hyphenate "Child's-Eye," especially on #1 where "Child's" and "Eye" fall on different lines.
