I've been reading some fiction about Mennonites, and I've become interested in the lifestyles of both the Mennonite and Amish people. Can anybody suggest easy to read books about these people groups that are really easy to understand? I hear that Amish youth around a certain age are given an opportunity to live outside the community to decide whether they'd like to come back there to live their entire lives. I'd love to know more about the differences, similarities etc. I just find the whole thing really interesting and fascinating.

Trish, you should get in touch with John (guynoir) and ask him about his neighbors.

There is a book called "Seeking Peace" with a whole bunch of stories about Mennonites living the call to live nonviolently in the face of conflict. My former Mennonite church gave it to me as a graduation present. I was hoping to tell you author and other information, but I can't find it at the moment ...

Thanks Bill, I didn't know that about John. Thanks to you too, Micah and Hismusicgal. I'll have to look it up online or something. Being in Australia, I don't know that they'd have much information about those communities, even in the libraries. I'll have to look that up too. Not having a credit card or anything, I would find it difficult to buy books from the US. I've heard that there is a period where Amish teens can leave the community to see if they want to continue living in the community the rest of their lives or not. That interests me as that would seem to be a complete culture shock and a test of their faith! I don't know if that's true or not though.

I think that most return to the Amish.

My hubby does farm/auction business frequently with an Amish man.

There's a book by Elizabeth Bauman called Coals of Fire. Try it.

Thanks for all the titles, guys. I'm going to look them up either at my local Christian bookstore, or at the library.
