I hear some people (Christians) always talking a/b some folks being religious when I just see them as trying to live by the word of God and live like Christ.

Can someone explain to me what they think being religious is?

There is a vast difference between being religous and living in relationshhip. In being religious we try an earn love and favor by our actions. In a living relationships are actions are for the purpose of fostering and depending that relationship. By being religous our focus is self-center. In a living relationship, our focus is on the object of ones love.

James 1:26-27
If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

It kind of makes me wonder, abstain, just how "Christian" is the attitude of those who talk about other folks behind their back. Sounds a bit like gossip, judgementalism, self-righteousness, and even hypocrisy. You are wise to form your own discernments regarding Christlike living according to God's Word and not to rely on the questionable attitudes of "some people"!.

When it is used in a negative sense, it is much like the religious leaders of Jesus' incarnation. They pretended to be godly but only to their own advantage. Religion was like a club to them. They did not truly know or understand God. In fact, they did not recognize God the Son in their midst and incited the people to have Him executed on a cross.

Religious people today still don't know Jesus, even though they go to church and play the part. They, like the ones in the NT, think Christianity is about rules and power and prestige.

<<<<QUOTE>>>religious:

Look. I think Christians are disengenous when they complain that they are "not religious." We are religious. It is a simple fact. It just happens that we believe our religion accurately reflects our obligations to the Ultimate Deity; i.e., God.

Unbelievers, generally think that our views do not reflect reality. So we fit the standard definition of religion as they see it. It's their language too!! We do not have a monopoly on the definition of what "religion" is. IOW, we don't define the language. We can say that our perception of God is more realistic and more logical. All of us Christians, with all of our differences, have to acknowledge that we are closer to God than those who don't believe in Him.

If someone asks me if I am religious, I say "yes." I know what they mean. I am not going to pretend that they don't know what the word means. I know what they mean, they know what they mean. Why confuse the matter with trying to correct them because some preacher told me not to answer in the affirmative?

Sure we're under the law, everybody knows that!

When He said, "A new covenant," He has made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear. (Heb 10:13)
