I think it depends on the thickness of the comforter. Some of the larger front load machines may actually handle something that bulky. You may want to check with the manufacturers. Of course they are pretty pricey but I hear do a great job. My current washer is only a few years old. Its a Whirlpool and is without a agitator. It automatically sets water level and does a great job. Not sure of the capacity but I have been able to put in pretty large items. I have a queen quilt that does fine in it but its not as thick and bulky as a tradional sized comforters.

Yeah, it depends on the thickness. I can wash mine, but it's pretty thin. An old one I had was thick and I had to take it to the laundromat.

I can wash mine in my washer but it doesn't get real clean. I just take it to the laundromat and toss it in the front loader, I can get the queen and the king in one load that way.

I have a front loading machine and can wash my queen size comforter in my washer. I couldn't wash one in my old top loader.

I once washed my fluffy blanket in the washing machine [standard size] and I've had no problem with that whatsoever!

I wash my kids' comforters in my washer all the time - but the biggest there is only a full. I have to take mine to the laundermat if I want to wash a queen sized. I can fit it into my washer but I don't thing it would get really clean. I too could do with a NEW bigger washer. Blessings, Garsy

I don't know the cubic feet of my washer, but it is pretty big. I have washed some thicker comforters for a full-sized bed, and a white comfortor that's not all that fluffy that may be close to queen sized. It is a top-loading GE and has 3 water levels for small, large and "super."
