OK, you guys, don't laugh at me.
I know absolutely nothing about cell phones, or any of that stuff. In fact, I still have a TV with rabbit ears 
I finally have come to the conclusion I need a cell phone. I need something really simple. I would not be using it very often - maybe only several times a week. I don't need any other gadgets with it...
Any recommendations? I read that one can get a refurbished one through AT&T for alot cheaper - one that has been returned within 30 days due to buyers remorse. Anyone know about that?

Not laughing ... I just got my first cel phone last week. (Although my workplace furnished a phone for the last few years ... but it broke a month ago.)
First of all ... ask yourself this question: Are you SURE you won't use it every day? Because those go phones or low-usage plans will charge you for EVERYTHING you do on them. Just checked out Verizon's plan and it's 99 cents per day and free mobile to mobile, but 10 cents a minute for everything else. Unless you only call Verizon customers, you could be paying more than if you just had a basic plan.
Once you have it, you're likely to find you use it for everything ... to call your kids at the store to see if you're out of milk, to call 911 to report a car in a ditch, to call a friend to say you're in the neighborhood, to call roadside assistance when your car breaks down or to call work when you're running late.
I'd just go shopping all the providers in your area (most have web sites) and scope out their basic plan. Verizon and Alltell will let you build a plan, pick out your phone and see what you'd pay per month. Both of them are about $39.99 for a basic monthly plan that does not include insurance for the phone and other extras. (Although the insurance is a MUST.) Most providers give you a phone that's free, or free after rebate, and Verizon waives the activation if you sign up on a weekend. (They also give me a discount because I sell Pampered Chef.)
Also ... touch base with the significant people in your life. If they're all on one particular network, it might be smart to sign up with them because it's free mobile to mobile.
Alltell has a "circle" that lets you include any number ... but on the basic, el-cheapo plans, there is only ONE number in that circle.
Verizon has a 30 day test drive that lets you walk away after a month with no obligation. So that might be a smart way to see how much you use a phone before you convert to a daily use plan, if you're really not using it that much.
Go to Wal-Mart. They have all the phones out and let you compare the phones side by side.
And talk to your friends ... they will tell you who to avoid and who to stay with.

Well, I spent weeks researching all the plans before I signed with Verizon ... and I have 30 days to change my mind ... so I am still checking things out to see if I could get a better deal elsewhere.
One of the reasons I got the phone is so I'm not afraid to make business calls. So I spent a LONG time on the phone today making them all. Gotta love free weekends!

I like to use letstalk.com to compare with what cell phones or monthly plans are available. I currently use *******, three thousand anytime mins w/in four States, Three of which are my primary calling areas. I pay $49.99 per month. Its the best calling plan I have ever found. My bill is unusally about 65.00 per month. I will never go back to a landline again!

I didn't get a cellphone until I started driving (3 years ago). My parents didn't want to add me to their Nextel account, since they were already maxing out their minutes. Instead they got me a T-mobile to-go phone. I don't know how much the phone was, but the minutes are 10cents each. I like for just basic calling. I ends up costing them about $25/month without minimal texting (which costs 10 cents to sent, 5 to receive). If you're going to make a lot of calls, go with a plan especially if you'll be using extra features such a picture and text messaging. If all you're doing to light calling, T-moble to go has worked great for me.
