Hi all 500 scientists are listed on the Heartland Institute's website for global climate change, quoted as scientists whose research doesn't support climate change. Some are upset that their names have been included on the list and despite requesting the removal of their names, the institute refuses to remove them. Why can't websites like this one just quote the people who support them? How can they expect us to take them seriously, if they can't be honest about their supporters? Regards, Ian

What does this have to do with 'quoting scientists out of context'?

ORIGINAL: Jhud What does this have to do with 'quoting scientists out of context'? Well... they're claiming that the listed scientists' work supports their contention that climate change is not man-made, something the scientists themselves do not agree with. If I carry out research that I conclude supports man-made climate change, and I'm listed on a site as supporting the opposite, that's quoting me out of context. Wouldn't you agree? Regards, Ian

Yes, I think it is insufficient for Heartland merely to list the names of researchers; it amounts to an appeal to authority, which is fallacious even if all the researchers wanted to be there. That being said, I think research is research, whatever the conclusion of the researcher. If I claim that certain research supports my claim, then it is up to me to show how it does; the 'opinon' of the researcher is irrelevant. I think it would be fine to challenge Heartland Institute's claim that such research supports their point of view, but I don't think it should be prevented on the basis that the researchers in question don't want to be associated with the institution in question. With that in mind, I think they should be free to list the papers, but to have the names alone is wrong.

I'm sorrry, but I don't understand. Are they upset because there name is on a list that falsely associates them with the anti global warming crowd. Or are they upset because there embarressed to be associated with those who thing the global warming is just cyclicle.

It doesn't really matter--they are upset because they are listed as scientists whose research supports the idea that global warming is not in part caused by human activity. Regards, Ian
