What do you all use to restrain your dog in the car? We have a 40 pound cocker spaniel that is wild in the car. I want to buy something to restrain her to keep her (and I) safe in the car. She feels she needs to be on my lap while I'm driving, and it's just not possible. I would like to hear what you all use for your dogs. Thank you in advance :D

My mom has doggie car seats for her two. They attach to a harness and they also give a nice place to sit-like a small dog bed, but it is raised, so her doxies can see out the windows, which they appreciate. It keeps them off her lap, which she appreciates.

My suggestion is that you should take the dog for a walk before taking her in the car. Take her for a good long walk. If she is drained of all that pent up tension she will relax better in the car.

It would depend on the type of car. In the car I had as a single gal (Mustang) I would have had to use a harness/seat belt for my dog at the time. After getting married, my hubby had an Explorer so we bought a barrier to keep the dog in the very back. At times we also use a crate for back there. It also depends on your dog and whether they will mind being confined to the one seat or would prefer a little bigger area to move around. IMO, the seatbelts are probably a bit safer because in the event of an accident the dog can't really get tossed about, whereas with a barrier they still can.

Training. Our Jack Russell learned early on about travel behavior having gone on the road with me since a wee pup.

We have "stow and go" seating in our van. I use the U-bolt where the seat attaches. I take a leash splitter and clip one end on the U-bolt, and the other on the dog's collar. Walla! Dog is restrained, but still able to sit/stand/lie down as she pleases. She is a therapy dog, so fairly well trained. In the van, though, she would like to sit on my lap...

We put our 2 small dogs in a dog kennel. We put them in the same one so they can curl up with eachother. If we ever have to slam on the breaks we don't have to worry about them going flying now. And we don't have them walking back and forth on our laps driving us nuts! It's just not safe having dogs walking back and forth like that.
