First of all, Dr. Laura said she was still voting for McCain, but expressed concern in her blog about his choice of VP.

quote:

I’m stunned - couldn’t the Republican Party find one competent female with adult children to run for Vice President with McCain? I realize his advisors probably didn’t want a “mature” woman, as the Democrats keep harping on his age. But really, what kind of role model is a woman whose fifth child was recently born with a serious issue, Down Syndrome, and then goes back to the job of Governor within days of the birth?

I am haunted by the family pictures of the Palins during political photo-ops, showing the eldest daughter, now pregnant with her own child, cuddling the family’s newborn. When Mom and Dad both work full-time (no matter how many folks get involved with the children), it becomes a somewhat chaotic situation. Certainly, if a child becomes ill and is rushed to the hospital, and you’re on the hotline with both Israel and Iran as nuclear tempers are flaring, where’s your attention going to be? Where should your attention be? Well, once you put your hand on the Bible and make that oath, your attention has to be with the government of the United States of America.

So, Christian women. Does she have a point? Those of you who critcized mothers who should be subjective to their husbands, keepers of the home, not usurping the authority of men, etc., now we have one who could be the leader of the free world.

Oh, yeah, Dr. "I-am-my-kids-mom" Laura, who has a well paying full time career, blasting another career woman advice for not staying home and raising the children.

My admiration for such a blatant double standard knows no bounds....

This is somthing that has been talked about in our home lately. I know plenty of woman work outside their homes and have little ones to take care of, but .... . I would love to study the scriputres on this, but it will probably be sent to the Womans Role folder. I would think that if her husband is ok with what she's doing then it fine. I'd love to hear from him on this subject.

I don't care for Dr. Laura very much and could care less what she thinks.

I believe women are to be submissive to their husbands .... not all men.

I believe a woman should be a keeper of the home..... that does not translate for me a housekeeper rather she manages her home well.

I believe that in the Church organization it's men who are to be in the top authority....but that does not mean women don't have a voice rather when the buck stops it falls on the heads of men who "should" have been doing things right.

So I am not sure if "I" am the type of woman you are looking to in this thread for a reply.

Some of us didn't stop working at all. Some of us had to do payroll from the hospital bed. "To whom much is given is much expected". My grandmother while in labor had to prepare her birthing bed and a few days after delivary had to be right back out in the fields and doing her regular chores.

I think Dr. Laura has a personal problem and may need to seek some help with it.

Yes it can. I know both my parents worked and we had a live in babysitter, yard man and a housekeeper. We are a rather large family and yes things can get chaotic but that does not mean that it's "bad". I only had one child and was a SAHM who worked from my home. Things were chaotic at times for us.

Would she ask this of a father who was president or VP or in the military?

What if Malia Ann or Natasha was (God forbid) gravely ill? Where would Obama's attention be?

Both Palin parents don't work full time as Dr. Laura said. At least since the baby's been born, her husband is staying home and, quite often, taking the baby to where she is. I think it's a disingenuous argument.

No matter how talented, in demand, or capable a woman is, she must not consider her career or calling till her children are grown and gone. There's a nice way to ensure we never have scientists, judges, politicians, or teachers of any merit or level of success that are women - make them wait till they're 40 to start their careers. Each family has to figure out what's going to work and it's their call not ours to determine they're own dynamic and what they can accomplish with the support system they have.
