I have a fear of heights.
Not just "concern", but a debilitating, sick in the pit of my stomach, dizzying fear.
There is a certain highway I must travel every Friday that is raised (like a bridge) throughout the city I have to go through. I am fine on this highway until it gets to the "bridge" area, then I nearly get sick, sweaty, gripping the steering wheel till my hands are sore.
I am tense throughout the 10 miles this lasts.
My peripheral vision sees the "falling away" of the sides and no matter what lane I'm in (three lanes of traffic), I nearly lose it.
Once I am through it, I calm down and am ok.
How does one overcome this?
I have had people tell me to "face my fear" to overcome it, I have prayed and yet this fear overtakes me.
Help!

When you get right down to it, most fears are ultimately fears of death, aren't they? Your emotions react to your thinking you are in danger of dying, and your body reacts to your emotions by pumping adrenaline.
This is not a bad thing. There are real dangers that we need to be able to react to swiftly. Thank God He designed us so. But, when there is no real danger, then it becomes a problem. And it is rooted in our mind. There is error that needs correcting with the truth.
Hebrews 2:14-15
Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.
If we are truly Gods Children. If we have truly been translated out of the realm of death and into the realm of eternal life with and through Jesus Christ...what do we have to fear? The reality is that, as Christians, we have eternal life now. And to be absent from our bodies is to be present with the Lord, which is far better.
This is our reality as Children of God. This is truth. As we depend upon Christ, He renews our minds, allowing us to distinguish right from wrong, truth from error. This is the taking captive of those thoughts which are in error and allowing Him to replace them with correct thoughts, with truth.
The truth is that we do not need to be held in slavery by our fear of death, for Christ has defeated death, and in Him we have life...eternal life. That is a present reality, not just a future hope. Bless you.

i dont know that this would constitute as a fear. what iam trying to say is this is a man made thing and not in the safest of place or guaranteed to last any amount of time. however if you know that you are saved then stop to realize that if the lord takes you while going over this bridge then you are going to be with him for eternity. put your faith in the lord not in the things of this world or what man has made.

Now, I'm not a physiologist or any 'expert' in behavior modification however, often, the anticipation of 'danger'(to you)can be nearly as incapacitating as the potential danger itself. The fact you "face your fear"(daily with prayer)is a good starting point. Often we concentrate on the fear rather then the ongoing deliverance. Personally, I would choose to memorize, "So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops."(Matthew 10:26,27) or "Because of the surpassing greatness of [His] revelation, there was given me a limitation to keep me from exalting myself! For He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you for My power is refined in weakness." Most gladly then, I will glory in my weakness so that the power of Christ may contrast in me. Therefore, I can be content with my lack, my insult, distresses and difficulties for Christ's sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong."(2Corithians 12:7,9,10) or some such and when your feel your resolve weakening, keep your eyes on the your lane and recite away!

I agree with the above posts, and recommend the book "Running Scared: Ocercoming Fear, Worry, and the God of Rest" by Ed Welch.

You have a better chance of being injured or dying, while walking in circles in your basement (while worrying), than in a plane.

I would first indentify the fear, that is what exactly is it that you are afraid of if being in that situation. From there I would take baby steps to confront that fear.
