Just been musing about the effect music has to enhance a movie. When done well it can really add to the atmosphere and in some cases when I hear a certain piece of music it automatically conjurs the movie for me. What are your favorites?

I love the "O Brother Where Art Thou" tracks. However, if there's a soundtrack for "My Girl" it would be my favorite. I was the same age as the kids in the movie during that era of American life and culture, so the music and scenes bring back some great memories for me.

Wes Anderson always has great soundtracks. Elliott Smith's Needle in the Hay playing in The Royal Tenenbaums while Luke Wilson cuts his wrists, Sigur Ros in the climax of The Life Aquatic. Cameron Crowe also has great soundtracks. Peter Gabriel's In Your Eyes in Say Anything. I hate Vanilla Sky, but it had a wonderful soundtrack. Can't go wrong with Red House Painters in a movie...which leads me to Shopgirl. Brilliantly featuring Sun Kil Moon, playing Carry Me Ohio while Claire Danes is all depressed. Nice. Oh, and definitely Pretty in Pink. When Molly's mad at the world and it's playing New Order's Elegia. "What about prom, Blaine?! What about prom?!!" Awesome. And when they finally make it to prom..."I just want to let them know that they didn't break me." Cue OMD's If You Leave. Yeah...I've seen that movie way too much. While eating Edy's ice cream. I need a better life, haha.

*sheepish grin* . . . Office space? I rarely am entranced by a whole soundtrack, but certain moments will stick out in my mind: I loved hearing Iron & Wine's The Trapeze Swinger on the credits of In Good Company. Mad World in the last scene of Donnie Darko. The Shin's "New Slang" playing in the waiting room scene of Garden State. Peter Gabriel's book of love as Richard Gere comes up the elevator to woo Susan Sarandon in Shall We Dance. The whole wedding party singing Dianne Warwick's "Say a Little Prayer" in My Best Friend's Wedding. Or Dermot Mulrooney singing "The Way you Look Tonight" To Julia Roberts on the ferry. The Pixie's "Where is my Mind?" in Fight Club in Ed Norton's grim final scene. Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" in Almost Famous as the band belts it out on the tour bus. Goo Goo Doll's "Iris" in City of Angels

A lot of great ones have been mentioned. How about Fiddler on the Roof? I loved listening to that when I was a kid. I also like the soundtrack to Somewhere in Time, but I always was a sucker for Rachmaninoff.

The whole wedding party singing Dianne Warwick's "Say a Little Prayer" in My Best Friend's Wedding. I really liked Diana King's Say A Little Prayer from that movie! Here is another one Purple Rain by Prince and the Revolution.
