I'm putting together three proposals to teach classes at writers conferences (two 1-hour classes and one continuing class that would be approximately 5 hours long). Writing the proposals is no problem, but I have no idea what to request as a fee. I know there are a few professional writers who view this forum occasionally, so I'm wondering if anyone knows what normal fees are. Although I have teaching/training experience through my salaried job and from teaching a graduate law class, I assume I would be considered a newcomer for this purpose and therefore would be paid on the low end of the scale. I also realize that some of the compensation (and possibly all for a 1-hour class) might come in the form of free registration for the conference and maybe room, board, and travel expenses. But I just have no clue what a Christian writers conference pays. So if anyone out there does, I'd appreciate your input. Thanks.

Hmmm....good question. As you said, Kathryn, if this is your first time teaching at that particular conference, it may be that the best they offer is to comp your conference fee, room, and meals (maybe your travel; that's pretty standard). Or you could just quote them an amount of, say, three hundred bucks, and watch their reaction. If they don't faint, say, "that's per session, you understand."

Does the Christian Writer's Market book have a list of fees? It might be more specific. Here is what it says in the Writer's Market for 2008: Writer's Workshops (per hour) High: 220 Mid: 75 Low: 30 Writer's Workshops (event) High: 4400 Mid: 1663 Low: 250 Presentations at Regional Writer's Conferences: High: 1000 Mid: 336 (average) Low: 50 Hope this is helpful.

Thanks for your help. I'll look in the Christian market guide, too.
