I've been taking Omega 3 fish oil capsules for two months now. During that time, I've noticed that my scalp and other areas of my body itching more than usual. I've changed shampoos and tried some scalp lotion like Scalpison, but my head still itches.

I called the pharmacy and they said that the only side effect listed for fish oil was digestive system problems. Does anyone else take fish oil capsules? If so, have you had any unusual side effects from them?

I've been taking fish oil capsules for years---no side effects that I know of. I take 6000mg/day. I've not heard of others with your symptoms and know quite a number of people who take it. Anything else it could be?

I'd be surprised if it's the fish oil. They can be hard on my tummy sometimes but that's it and I've never heard of any other kind of allergies. It could be possible, I suppose, but even if it is, if you're not breaking out in hives and it's not serious or dangerous, I think you should try to find a way to deal with it. I have temporary upset stomach problems sometimes from taking the fish oils but the benefits and need for them for my health outweighs that so I deal with it. But I think there's probably another explanation for the itchiness.

I agree that it's not serious. You may want to look at how you're taking them. Some people find that taking meds with/without food helps.

You may also want to check that they're not interacting with any other medication that you may be on.

My husband got a UTI from the over the counter fish oil caps, so the dr prescribed a prescription only fish oil cap and he still got one.

Why are you taking the fish oil capsules? For the omega-3 fatty acids? If so, I take flax seed oil capsules for that purpose (or you can use ground flax seed). I haven't had any problems with it, and I'm one of those unfortunate people who's allergic to many things.

I use it to help with my arthritis, and as an added bonus it lowered my cholesterol - which was below normal anyway, but it dropped about 20 points in six months.

Say what ????????????????? That makes no sense. I'd have to see some scientific evidence for that!

Why not? Who's to say what makes sense and what doesn't? Why should I suddenly start reacting to shellfish when I eat it or react to a medication in a particular way when no one else does?

Quite honestly I don't care what you require. The OP asked for anyone that had side effects and my husband did.

By UTI, I mean Urinary Tract Infection. If you mean something else, please correct me. Fish oil does not cause UTI's. Did the Doc actually say that? I did not say I "required" anything. Since the topic is fish oil, if you say it causes UTI's, people may believe it and avoid it. It's a relevant question.

Yes, and I'm sorry, I thought you were being confrontational.

It could be in with combination with his other meds but yes, he did get one several times. Dr can't explain it but he seems convinced it somehow caused it. The dr told him not to take fish oil anymore and he hasn't had a problem since. Every time he took it, within a matter of a week or two he'd get one. I've been married to him for 23 years and he has never had one, only when he took fish oil. We don't eat a lot of fish.

Very strange. Thanks for the clarification.
