They flourish in acidic soils with good drainage. Potting soils developed especially for gardenias are available. Unless you are in the deep south, I would not recommend Gardenias. Do you want a flowering bush or pretty flowers? If it is the later, you may want to consider Daylilies Daylilies are relatively hardy, can handle both heat and dry and heat and humid--I had them in New Mexico and I have them in Mississippi.
