So finally we emptied the garden pond (or "the pit of sin" as we've called it because of its gradually deteriorationg content and lack of circulation). Underneath the water, stones, rubble, mud, four frogs (we found a new home for them) and an assorment of unindentified water insect fauna, there was a huge rubber tarpaulin, and underneath this again a foundation of sand-overlaid clay. Depth in center ap. 30 centimeters, diameter ap. 2 - 3 meters. We want to fill it in with mainly gravel, exept for two levels at the top with sand (ap.5cm.) and then soil between flagstones of varying size and shape, maybe later erect a pavilion/bbq-area. Questions: This being a converted pond, do we need to have some kind of drainage built into it? This being in Norway, is the construction as outlined safe from frost heaving? Any answers and suggestions are welcome, as we for now only have emptied the pond and have not started any other work with it! Dag
