just a quick intro of myself.....you all can do likewise or not as you feel comfortable.
I am a mom of 5 children ages 17 down to 3. I have breastfed all of them.
The time frame I have nursed has been as little as 18 months with my oldest and as long as 4 years with my next to youngest. I have done child led weaning, parent led weaing, inteference by grandparent weaning and medical reasons weaning. My favorite is child led weaning!
I had been nursing non stop (except for a one and half/two week break between baby #3 and baby #4 when she weaned herself just that long before he was born) since 1999. My youngest just recently weaned...she is three.

Yay! I love new fresh threads!
My quick intro...nursed 3 babies, expecting a 4th little nursling (5th child...counting my stepson). Nursed the first 2 months full-time, then 2 more months part-time before he rejected the breast completely. Nursed Hannah (now 3) until she was almost 2.5, including through a pregnancy and 5-6 months after baby was born. Nursed Levi 11 months, when he weaned with only a small amount of help on my part. While I know I did the right thing nursing Hannah so long, I did not want to do that with Levi and his personality is not one that was as attached as Hannah either, so it worked out. My goal with the next one is 12 months and I don't anticipate going over 18 months.

Carried over from the previous thread....
I was wondering if it would be ok to take Tramadol for pain after having surgery to remove all 4 impacted wisdom teeth, even though KellyMom's site rates it as an L3.
Donna thought it would be relatively safe due to other c-section meds also being rated L3.
WOF also recommended timing the dosage with feedings. I will definitely do that if possible. I'm not sure what the dosage is yet, dh is picking up the prescription for me now.
I am currently doing fine with alternating Advil and Tylenol for pain relief.

I don't nurse yet, but I do leak nicely!!
First little one is due June 10 and I plan/hope on having a nice long nursing relationship. I think my husband may be more rabid about it than I am. I LOVE seeing the changes coming over him with the idea of a little one on the way.

The reason day 2 or 3 is the worst is that is when the swelling is worst. I would definitely keep up on at least the ibuprofen since it's an anti-inflammatory. Also, don't get brave and eat things you aren't supposed to, even if you think you're doing well.

Ditto to Donna and I will add
ICE ICE BABY.
I iced - no bruising/swelling.
Husband did not - WAY bad bruising/swelling well into 3 wks post.
Could be different doc/different style. BUT I loved the feel of the cool ice on my cheekies. It helped the Demoral work better I swear. I was in a nice little bubble for a few days.

I'll add as well ... don't under any circumstance try to use a straw ... it can pull your stitches out! Also, do warm salt-water rinses ... it really helps soothe the area.

I iced for 2 days and then did heat for 1 day.
I ate pudding, jello, soups, broths and mashed potatoes. Anything you can mush around your mouth with your tongue is good.

My intro - my name is Julie (big secret there!) and I have a 4 year old who I nursed about 6 months. We had a really good experience but nursing makes me sick (literally makes me nauseous and gives me terrible stomach cramps and diarrhea) and I also had some supply issues due to goig overboard on formula supplimentation (i.e. laziness eta - the use of the term "laziness" here applies only to my assessment of my own situation at the time, not to formula use in general!)). It was also really difficult for me to physically nurse comfortably because of my breastsize. When DS was ten months old I had a breast reduction surgery and let my surgeon know that I wanted to BF future kiddos.
I have a DD who is 18 months old. I BF her for almost 6 months. She hated it. I can't say that strong enough. She also hated bottle feeding, anyway, that's another story. I BF with almost a full supply after my surgery and believe that had she been a better nurser I might have hada full supply.
Now I have a new DS who is nursing like a champ and I have my fingers tightly crossed that he will help me to have a full supply and we will have a much longer nursing relationship than I did with the first two.
Now that that's over, Tammy, have you checked out Safe Fetus? I don't know if it will give you different info than Kelly Mom but it does talk about why things are rated how they are and that often times helps you to know if you should take a med or not.

My first nursling is 22 months and still nursing.
My second nursling is 3 months, exclusively breastfed, and almost as big as his sister. They wear the same size diapers.  She thinks it's funny to try on his clothes, and they fit her.
Nursling #1 was extremely difficult in the beginning, but got the hang of it after a month. Nursling #2 came out of the womb ready to nurse for an hour.
Tammy, is the tylenol/advil combo not working for the pain?
With my 1st c-section, I didn't get any meds to take home. This time I got 600mg tabs of Ibuprophen. Which is the same as 3 regular tabs. The script said I could take one every 6 hours. My Dr is very conservative about therapeutic medications taken while pregnant or breastfeeding.
You might only need a very limited amount Tramadol to take the edge off the pain and keep using tylenol/advil for the rest of the day. Those prescription pain killers are pretty effective and long lasting.

Tammy, my first meal after my wisdom teeth came out was turkey dinner...every thing was already mashed, or mashable! Carrots, squash, turnip, etc. I didn't attempt the turkey though!
Also, a wet teabag is supposed to help if you place it right over the incision, I don't know what it does, but my mom and aunt made me do it!

I have one little nursling, he's 7 months, and we nurse now once a day...
It was tough in the beginning, I had a hard time being the only source for him, so pumped quite a bit, and then other people had a chance to help out.
He never wanted to latch, so we started out with a nipple shield and used that for a few months. We started weaning because I think he's just too nosy to nurse now!! All he wants to do is play and bite, so I think he's decided on his own that it's time to wean. I'm ok with that.

Thanks guys. I took the Tramadol during the night. I also felt queasy during the night. Not sure if that was from the Tramadol or from the fact that I hadn't eaten anything since before the surgery. They had told me not to, but I ate some ice cream during the middle of the night. I felt a bit better when I woke up this morning, then I got queasy when I got up to make the kids breakfast - but I did feel better after eating some oatmeal.
Anyway, I'm going to try using just Advil/Tylenol. I didn't notice a difference in pain by using the Tramadol anyway.
For all of you that have had your wisdom teeth pulled - when was the pain the worst? The first 12 hrs after the freezing wore off? The 2nd day? The 3rd day?

When I had my wisdom teeth done, I actually didnt have TOO much pain. When the bottom ones were done (cut out) I had pain the first day I got home. And could only eat broth and yogurt. When the top ones were done (pulled) I ate dinner of regular food (very slowly) that night. I only took pain meds (other than just OTC Ibuprofen) the first day with the ones that were cut out. Honestly, it wasnt as bad as I thought it would be.

(((((Tammy))))) I feel for you! I had mine cut out when I was young and still single...that was difficult enough...but with a family?! Oy! I found that the third day was the worst too--but for me it was a horrendous headache. Wet wash cloths and freeze them...they mold to your chin and face very well. I would probably pump and dump but I'm just extra cautious about stuff like that.
I'm Tammy and I have a 4 1/2 month old who has nursed but isn't nursing right now...but we're working on it. She was born with a cleft lip and had latching problems from the beginning. After her surgery 5 1/2 weeks ago, she has utterly refused to nurse. Thankfully I've been able to pump and support half of her feedings.
We are going to the LC in a little while. I'd appreciate your prayers. I asked them about refusing a bottle and using and SNS. They were more willing to work with an SNS at this point. We've been doing skin to skin since yesterday afternoon but it hasn't helped much (I think it might have helped my supply a tiny bit though!). They will work with us today and we'll go from there. I know it's silly but I'm nervous about going!

Intro....I have two boys, Timmy is 2 years, 7 months and Jimmy is 11.5 months.
I nursed Timmy for 7 months total, but he started getting formula around 2-3 months because of supply issues. So, at 7 months I nursed him one last time during the only part of the day I had milk and said goodbye. It was really sad for me.
Jimmy is still nursing. Trying to slowly wean him in the daytime, but I don't plan to wean him at night until he sleeping through (no, 6 hours is not sleeping through to me...sleeping through begins when he gets put down for the night until he wakes for the day in the morning, 8p-8a). LOL!

Hi, I'm Katrina and I'm a breastfeeding Mom. My first developed nipple preference after a stay in NICU. I pumped exclusively for five months and then finally got him nursing. He continued to nurse until 22 months old. He's now almost seven years old.
My second is two years old. He nursed for eight months before his baby sister caused my milk to dry up.
My third one is almost one year old and still nursing!

Intro: I have one son, Hunter who is almost 15.5 months old. So far he is my only nursling and we nursed for 13 months, 12 of them he nursed during the night atleast once. We had a awesome nursing experience though the first 4-6 weeks were a little rough because he favored one side over the other. Once he got the latch down it was smooth sailing. I plan on nursing future children as well and hopefully have a great experience with them too.
