Move Along, Scooter: Americans Save On Gas AP) Joan Kohler is not a typical new scooter customer. But the 51-year-old restaurant owner bought a candy-apple red Honda last week as worries about the price of gas overrode any trepidation about learning to drive it. With the average price of gas closing in on $4 a gallon, many cash-strapped motorists are turning to fuel-stingy motor scooters and smaller motorcycles. Dealers across the nation report brisk sales this spring, particularly for those that get from 75-120 miles per gallon. Entire Article I just purchased an Elit 80cc Honda scooter a little over a week ago and am already seeing the savings. I use mine mainly to commute to work and have already put over 200 miles on it. I seem to be averaging about 90 mpg. About every 90 miles I have to put about a gallon of gas in it.

The tank's full capacity is 1.3 gallons. It has a red area near the empty mark. Once it is there, there is about 0.26 gallons left. I usually fill up when it gets to this area.

Still though, with that kind of gas mileage who could complain with having to stop to fill up more often?

Nearly everyone here has to get on the Freeway to get to work...I don't think anything under a 150cc can travel on a freeway, can it?

Anyone who wants to buy a scooter should do it, but it is not without costs. Injuries and fatalities will certainly be the price paid for lower gasoline expenses.

Well, a scooter is actually roughly four times safer than a motorcycle, IIRC, and only twice as dangerous as a car. So it's not that bad. Just remember to follow the MSA's recommendations to wear at least a DOT certified 3/4 helmet, a long sleeve shirt, tennis shoes or better, and jeans or something made of a stronger material that goes to your ankles. If you do that, you can reduce the risk of serious injury in a lot of low speed crashes. One problem with being on two wheels is that you're difficult to see. It's important to wear bright clothing, be very vigilant about people who might be pulling up behind you at stoplights, and watch out for people who might move into your lane. This is a particular problem if you live in a place with a lot of traffic like NYC. But that said, the fun of motorcycling is certainly worth the risk (if managed properly), and riding a scooter may be worth if it the risk is managed as well.

That would rule out the possibility of a scooter being a good idea for us if that is the case! I do not know the particular laws regarding interstate travel where I live. Fortunately for me, it was a non-issue, as I have a route I can take to work where I can avoid the freeway and major highways. My 80cc scooter shows 55 mph on the speedometer and even a notch above that. However, I have only got it up to 50 mph. It would probably make it to 55 mph depending on certain factors (wind speed and direction, incline of road, etc.), but I do not plan to try to go that fast anyway. As far as Hondas, the next scooter up from mine was a 250cc which can travel interstate speeds. It cost about $2300 more.

I know that riding a scooter is riskier than riding in a car/truck. However, I plan to do what I can within our means to be safe, and I figured that when it is my time to go be with the Lord, whether or not I am riding a scooter will not have a bearing on that.

In case there are some interested, they actually have airbag jackets now. I had never heard of these until I began searching for motorcycle/scooter safety gear. Here and here are links to sites about these. Here is a link to an article where an airbag jacket was attributed to keeping a motorcycle rider from sustaining more injury than he did when he was thrown 100 feet and hit the ground at an impact rate of 140 mph.

Scooters may save on gas, but motorcycles may not save that much. They require a lot of maintenance. Also in some states you need a motorcycle license to ride a scooter anyway.

I've seen too many motorcycle riders as road kill in LA and they were wearing helmets, etc. One guy that I stopped to help died in front of me. That picture stayed with me and kept me from riding a bike on any freeway. I'll stay in my gas guzzling van with the 5-star crash rating!
