For years I had lower than normal blood pressure. My weight was low too.

A few years ago, it became normal. My weight started increasing as well.

Now the lowest I can seem to get it is about 125 over 85-90. One time (about 2 years ago) it was 145 over 105. I had it checked on Friday and it was 150 over 90 and my weight was 198. I've never weighed this much in my life!!

Anyone who posts in the Mental Health Encouragement thread, knows that I am bipolar. I am starting on some new meds tonight. The dr. said that she feels these meds will not only help with the bipolar, but with the weight and high bp as well.

Do high BP and weight go hand-in-hand?

I don't use salt when I cook. When I buy pre-prepared foods, I try to make sure the salt/sodium content is low. When I go out to eat, I request that my foods be prepared with no salt.

I know there are several threads for weight loss support and I'll probably resub one of those. Any tips on controlling bp?

I think high BP and weight go together as well.

You and I are alot alike. I struggle with depression, weight and high BP.
It can really be tough to keep all 3 straight.
(One med/diet or another knocks another)

I have found that walking is helping me. But lately for me it is too rainy (depressing) and cold (achy) to walk,
so therefore; I EAT!!

Increased weight can cause high bp ~ but then I have to lose and my bp is fine. Stress can also increase it. High bp can also be just something that happens in your family (though as you used to be ok, it is probably less likely). Exercise can help reduce bp.

Kiwi fruit and bananas both contain good levels of potassium which helps to regulate bp.

As you are on meds, it may be worth speaking with your doctor about your diet to see what foods may be worth adding to help you with this. Obviously you can buy supplements, but I'd advise you don't take any before speaking with your doctor first.

There are skinny people with high blood pressure, but yes, weight and high BP do tend to go hand-in-hand. My mother has the same problems you do, but she refuses medication. It scares me, but I can't make her do it.

The frightening thing about BP is that it can be high and you never know it. My mom went to the doctor for a routine visit about a year ago and her BP was through the roof. She ended up being in the hospital for three days. I'm glad you are aware your BP is high and you are working with your doctor to get it down!

I think it can go together but it is based a lot on genetics. My family is not overweight but every single adult is on high blood pressure medication even with a low salt diet. a lot of the older ones have had bypasses. Heart disease/ high blood pressure runs in my family.

I don't think that it comes down mostly to genetics. Obviously it does in your family, but it's not always the case... there are some people who will latch onto someone saying it's genetics when they aren't doing anything to help themselves (just as some people claim they can't lose weight because they have an underactive thyroid when their thyroid is actually fine)...

Not necessarily.

Do you get regular physical activity that raises your heart rate? You see, when you participate in that type of activity, your blood vessels dilate. Regularly dilating them not only keeps them dilated more, allowing more blood to pass and lowering the force necessary to move the blood, but also keeps them flexible. Regular dilation also keeps the plaque from sticking.

So, regardless of your weight, if you are physically active, your blood pressure is more likely to remain low. What I am saying is, you don't have to lose weight to lower your BP

It can do, but is not necessarily so.

I am 60 lbs overweight and yet my BP is 90/60, or at most 100/60.

I think it is different for each person. My bp is generally pretty normal (110/70 or so) most of the time. I am 60+ lbs over weight. I do have a family history of high bp though. It can also be the medication that you are on as well as recent stress. I would say to keep an eye on it and see if it is still high after the meds seem to level out and emotionally you are more level. I know that stress is a huge factor for me and bp - like when I go to the doctor or go to give blood, it is generally higher than just a random check.

I meant to start walking today, but I had to make some last minute changes in plans and didn't get to go.

Hey Honey~

Here is what my book says:

Hypertension Self Help:

* Stop smoking (I know you probably don't smoke but I just have to put this anyway)
* Keep your alcohol consumption moderate
*Keep your weight down
* Reduce your intake of animal fats
* Take regular exercise
* Learn to relax
* Avoid stress

Lately, I've been reading that bananas are good for depression. So, integrate them into your diet.

Good to see you again sweetie and keeping you in my prayers!

I love bananas!
I'm working on the rest.
