It would be nice if we could share thoughts about how singers and fans are dealing with high gas prices. I do know that some quartets have downsized in the kind of vehicles they use. Others are just waiting and hoping that we can see some reversal in gas prices. Will the rising prices have an effect on attendence at concerts? Have you already noticed that?
I think there is more singing at local churches. A lot could be said about this topic. We all need to make this a matter of prayer. We need to encourage singers all that we can and SGM in general. I do know that many are discouraged. I know truely we have the same God that has always supplied the needs of His children and He will always do so. And some wonderful day after while we will take a trip out of this world that will not require expensive gas! GRAND ANTICIPATION INDEED!

Lots and lots of prayer!

I sing at several nursing homes and several restaurants and it is becoming a considerable burden to get to all of them but the Lord continues to provide just enough to get me there and back home and I know He'll continue to provide my needs but not always my wants. I just keep on singing His praises

The groups with the buses that get 6 miles a gallon have got to be going through a lot of soul searching to determine exactly how the Lord wants to use them and how best to serve Him.
They all need our prayers.

I had 4 dates in TX this weekend with over 800 miles in travels... and gas was definitely expensive... but just like Jesus feeding the 5000- the Lord proved his faithfulness one more time...

I know that Lordsong and The McRaes had parked their Buses quite a bit last year. Instead they were traveling in a Suv with a trailer because they didn't want to pass the cost down to the fans. I believe if they were traveling quite a distance they were still using their bus. We seen the McRaes in Niota Tenn last year and that's what they were doing. Phill Cross and Poet Voices came to our Church in Cleveland Tenn in each of their own cars. They used our House system and Plugged their laptop into it and ran it like that. But we've been blessed with an awesome sound system. If groups are singing with tracks it seems logical given the size of most pa systems now that they could benefit by driving a Midsized suv with a trailer or am I way out in left field?

When I drive my SUV and pull a trailer I only get 10/11 miles per gallon of gas. For the difference in that and 7/8 miles per gallon on a bus, I may stick with the bus for the comfort. But my SUV is a Suburban, not a mid size.

Yeah but isn't diesel about a dollar or more on the gallon? It seems like around here it is and if that is the case it might be worth it and shorter commutes. I believe they're still taking the buses on longer drives.

I know that the high gas prices will keep me from traveling long distances , not just gospel concerts, but any other reasons too, such as vacationing, etc. I'm staying close to home.

Shouldn't they raise their fees to reflect their increased costs?

It seems that any savings from using an SUV and trailer would be more than offset by the cost of motel rooms.

little known fact: most artist require 2 or more hotel room accomodations upon booking... this is included in the contract.

My group, The Disciples Quartet (www.thedisciplesquartet.com)shameless plug, sold our bus and bought a dodge sprinter. We got it converted and we love it. It will probably get about 18 miles to a gallon pulling a trailer and we save just on the change to gasoline from diesel. You should check them out groups. If you want one, let me know. I am working with a dealership to sell them to traveling groups. We went to Mississippi from Indiana and it was a 1700 mile round trip. In the bus it would have been $1,700 for diesel. With our Sprinter, we paid $400 for gas!

How will the singers deal with the rising gas prices? The same way it's been going I'm sure for a while. We will see more groups alter their method of transportation, more groups disband, more groups go more regional in their travel and more groups trying to raise their flats. It will be more of the same. The thinning of the ranks at the national level will be good for the industry in the long run, quality-wise but I hate that there has to be some casualties along the way.

For the fans, the casual fan will drive shorter distances and go see fewer groups. The avid fan will do all they can to keep their same allegiances and schedule but try to make smarter choices where they can.

SoloSGArtist - Just FYI - I've been promoting concerts for 18 years and I've only been asked to provide a hotel room about 3 times.

Gospel Music contracts are a breeze...usually you pay 50% to confirm the booking, the balance before they go one stage...pretty much the end of story. I have worked with some country acts, just their riders (additions to the contract) can be pages long.

I too promote concerts and only on rare occasions an I asked to provide a room. That's just something I don't do. If necessary I would give the artist extra $ for a room, but that would be his responsibility. I rarely book a solist, they never have a sound system and as you say often want a motel room. Usually their flat is high compared to a trio or quartet.

My travel is scheduled out weeks in advance usually but now there will be fewer trips at the spur of the moment. If there are several groups scheduled on the same date within driving distance, I may choose the one closer to home (although there are exceptions). Some weeks when travel can take me many different directions - (like the last weekend in June) I may have to give up one of the concerts to comfortably be able to attend more.

I stay at the same motel chain most of the time and get 'free nights' after so many 'points' or nights stay. This is very helpful on long trips. If I'm not traveling alone we look at which vehicle gets the best mileage and everyone else pays for gas (driver doesn't as they are providing the car).

let me clarify... the artist that are "on top" and consistently pushing out hits... (which are the ones I am speaking of) when I say that "most" require a hotel room or two... so no - regionals and semi-popular groups don't "require" a hotel room

So far we are going to see who we want, within the same travel parameters as usual, but it is something to think about. We have noticed that there are less concert opportunities in our area than in prior years, which may be directly related to travel costs. As a farmer I use a lot of diesel, which has added a lot to my operating expenses. I will not be surprised to see groups decide that they just cannot hack the travel costs anymore.

The groups that are "on top" are the ones I'm talking about that I promote in our concert series. Greater Vision, Booth Brothers, Perrys, Mark Trammell Trio and Legacy Five are the ones we've had the past few years. I've still only been asked to proviude a hotel room, I can think of 3 times, in the past 18 years. No big deal, just sharing from my experience.

Other than a few soloists, I've only seen 1-2 groups that make this requirement in most cases. You may have an exception occasionally but Tony's right for the top groups in the country in SGM you don't see it.

As for me and my husband, we are going. We can either have a few extra bucks in the bank or we can travel and be blessed. I doubt we would sit at home all summer so we will go and support the efforts of those still traveling for Him. Of course, we will not be able to do that until summer school is out.
