Cut off their wings. Then they just become horses.

Ugh horse flies are the worst! When I was a kid, they would land on us and we'd jump into the water to make them let go! It didn't always work though. They're awful and they feed on blood - well, the females do anyways. From what I know, nothing repellent-wise will kill them. My grandaddy used this big barrel-looking thing like this. He put it near the stables, etc. and it really cut down on them.

Yeh...even though the horseflies I've seen were like 2" inches big, I think shooting them would require significantly more expertise than is available in this neck of the woods. Although...being chewed on by one would indeed feel like you had been shot.

Where are the horseflies a problem--for you or for your livestock? I feed my horses brewer's yeast; this helps some (changes blood chemistry slightly). Still have some problems with bugs, but not near as much as otherwise. Brewer's yeast also works to repel biting flies from humans.

I feed 1 tbsp per day as a top dressing on the grain. More can be fed, but I feed so little grain (horses on pasture) that I don't feel good about more. Also feed the dog around 1/2 tbsp and the cat 1/2 tsp of brewer's yeast each day (or when they ask for it). Helps repel fleas.
