I checked my contract and it expired as of May 26th. I guess I am back to square one, except for the first contacts. I know they can not be re-contacted by a new agent without paying commission to the first. At least there were not too many. Being naive certainly gives you a steep learing curve. I plan to shake off this first blow and move on the best I can. Can anyone give me advice on how to search for respectable agencies?

For non-Christian agents check Writers Market Guide 2008; for Christian agents check Christian Writers Market Guide 2008 (both of these can be found in larger bookstores, and some libraries). When you find some that seem to fit, check them out at preditorsandeditors.com (yes, that's the correct spelling). Then when you've winnowed the list down and are ready to start to querying them, follow the guidelines in each Market Guide to the letter. Hope this helps!

Check out here for a agent/publisher's credentials. Also you can check here also. I have a feeling that it wasn't the writer that made those publishers pass but the agency. Remember, the money moves to the writer, not away. If anyone ever asks for money upfront to represent you, then RUN!!! They should only ask to pay for the postage/copy expenses, but not to the lights on. Good luck, dear. kim
