I remember back in 1977 when Star Wars got snubbed by Annie Hall for Best Picture. Then four years later Raiders Of The Lost Ark got snubbed by Chariots Of Fire. So I was wondering how it is figured out because Star Wars, and Raiders were more popular with sequels, but the other two (Annie Hall -Chariots of Fire) won the Best Picture award.

Firstly, I don't think films win the Best Picture based on popularity, and rightly so. And secondly, the fact that Star Wars and Raiders had sequels shouldn't play into it because, well, they didn't have sequels when they were released.

The Academy is made up of people in show business...screen actors, writers, directors, etc. They simply vote for the winner in each category by mail. (They are provided with copies of all movies that have nominations.)

So it's whatever is most liked by the most people in the Academy.

In recent years the Academy Awards have become increasingly political, so these days the winner is often the movie that best expresses the politics of the vapid voters. But politics were less an issue thirty years ago.

I'm not a Woodie Allen fan, so I won't comment on Annie Hall, but Chariots of Fire was a better movie that Raiders of the Lost Ark.

A bunch of people from the entertainment world, who feel their taste in movies is superior to that of everyone else, meet around a table and take a vote.

Basically, they make the movies, they make awards for their movies, then they vote on which of their movies should get the awards. And too feel elitist, they give the awards to films that try to make statements or make them feel important or whatever.

The whole thing is run like politics, really. There's a reason all the sappy/ heartfelt movies are released in December. It's because the studios know these types of movies have the best shot at winning, so they want them fresh in the voters' minds when it's voting time.

It's kind of annoying unless you simply realize that the awards don't really mean anything (or shouldn't). For example, much of the Academy seems to be musically illiterate. Best Score seems to keep getting won for movies that any brain dead musician could have done. But they win because the composer lucks out by getting a director that likes to do lots of montages (which make the music stand out). I don't think John Williams or James Horner will be able to win any more Oscars unless there's a year with no films heavy on the montages.

(Bold added)

No Country for Old Men (winner), There Will be Blood, Michael Clayton...sappy/heartfelt?. Juno and Atonment are, though.

It may be politics, but most of the politicking is nothing to do with being left or right wing. The studios mount multi-million dollar Oscar campaigns for their movies which are in the running and I doubt they would be throwing all that money away willingly if they didn't think it helped.

BTW: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was a box office smash and won Best Picture although I suspect better movies came out that year. No doubt the voters were swayed by the remarkable success of all three LOTR movies both in quality of production and box office receipts.
