I needed to know and I can't recall how long my minister's sermons are. For smaller, country churches as well as larger churches.

About 45 minutes at our church. Give or take a few minutes.

Ours vary but generally the sermon portion of the services last 35-40 minutes. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

quote:
inlaws complain if the sermon at their Episcopal church goes more than 12 minutes Some of the elderly ladies complained to the pastor that his sermon's were too long. They needed to "empty their bladders" before he was finished. He told them it was perfectly acceptable to excuse themselves at anytime during the sermon but that he would not shorten his sermon to accommodate their bladders

My pastor's sermons tend to be about 25 minutes. Lately, I've been thinking that is too short and he should just keep going until the message gets conveyed. We could cut back on the music a little (I am in the music ministry, BTW), or better yet, go all day!

ORIGINAL: rcjames My sermons usually run 30 to 45 munutes or until a lot of folks fold their arms and I know they are not paying attention any longer. I really try to do as my then elderly english teacher in high school tolk us about the length of a writing assingment; Make it like a woman's skirt; Short enough to be interesting, and long enough to cover the subject. Thanks RC That's funny - will probably need to use that sometime.

In a communications class a few years ago I was told that a normal person's attention can be determined by changing their age to minutes. IOW, a 5 year old has a 5 minute attention span, at 16 a 16 minute attention span. That peaks at age 25, then it slowly declines. So you'd better tell them the important stuff withing the first 20 or so minutes if you want it to stick. FWIW, I was also told that 3 major points is, at most, about all a person will generally remember. The pastor I first began taking notes during his sermons usually preached no more than 15-20 minutes - and had the sermon outline published as an insert in the Sunday bulletin.

It's been my experience that 40 minutes is sort of the median -- give or take 10 minutes. Not too may sermons are an hour and not too many are under 30 minutes. BTW, this has been my experience in both big city churches and small rural churches.

I can tell when a sermon lasts too long because my watch stops ticking. A preacher I know usually makes his point within 10-15 minutes. I've asked him to put the sermons on the church's website after he delivers them, so we can refer to them again afterwards. He's too embarrassed to do so. Which is a shame because he's good.

The good ones are too short and the bad ones too long. My watch doesn't stop ticking but my heart does

I preach at two churches, the Anglican church the sermon is usually about 10 minutes the main focus is the Eucharist. At the community church where I take services the sermon is the focus and can be anywhere from 25 minutes and up.

I have been to many different churches through out my life because I use to move allot. I have been to very small country churches to big city mega churches, and sermons can be anywhere from 30 minutes to over 3 hours long. But any Pastor, Teacher, Ministry Leader etc should ALWAYS rely on the Holy Spirit as when to stop preaching. The Power of God (Holy Spirit) "Does not live by a Clock"! When I preach (teach) The Holy Spirit gets me going and who knows when I stop! Ask my kids, wife and relatives they will tell you, LOL We all must be led by the power of God (Holy Spirit) and not by clocks, people etc. I have seen Pastors who would keep looking at Notes and their watch while preaching. They are usually led by the flesh and not led by God and Gods Power!

Methodists and Presbyterians tend to run about 15 minutes and they are prompt about finishing on time! -Dave

I preach an average of 30 minutes each Sunday. I try hard to keep my message on track by 1) tell them what you're going to tell them, 2) tell them, 3)tell them what you told them 4) shut up!
