well... I like to do school between 8 and 2 with Gym and lunch and such. If the kids are dragging their heals... then who knows how long it could take.

ummmm.....well, if you count the household stuff (homemaking class!!) then about 10-2 or so every day. We do all sorts of things in different areas though and not all of it is "book work" time

Might be helpful if you post the ages of kiddos too, since that will make a difference.

We're not currently homeschooling, but when Noah was home last year and half of this year (1st and 2nd grade)...a good hour in the morning and a good hour in the afternoon and then we were done. That was if he cooperated. If not, it took longer.

I've just started doing "school" with Hannah (3) and we do it in two or three ten minute chunks whenever they fit. Right now, we're working on colors and tracing letters in her name, and lots of me reading to her, of course.

We don't have a set number of hours because we don't do traditional school. Homeschooling is life and it all just weaves together.

I get up between 6 and 6:30 to have devotions. I get the teens up at 7:00. We watch Christian television together.

They get 45 minutes (though it often drags out longer!) to get dressed and have their own personal devotions. Meet back in the kitchen at 8:45 to memorize some Bible verse together. Then everyone splits up.

Math comes first. Each student moves on to whatever they want to study in whatever order. If I catch them goofing off without all their work done, there are consequences. But each child finishes at their own pace and in whatever order they choose.

Typically, school expands to fit the time allotted to it. If we have somewhere to go, they rip through their work pretty fast. If not, it could be 3 or 4 before everyone is done.

In middle school, it could expand to bedtime and into the next day even.

But elementary, ah, those were the days! We would be done in two, maybe three hours. Oh, the memories....

We usually have about an hour of school in the morning and at the most three hours in the afternoon. There are times we go over this because someone is dragging their feet or simply refusing to do the work. This is not counting chores, devotions, or extra curricular stuff. My oldest has gymnastics and my mother in law takes them to work on school with them one night a week, to name a couple.
For the most part we stick to the four hours a day. It seems to work best for the kids. Less stressful. And they feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.

Thank You all. It is hard concept for me, with begging to homeschool to realize it is life vs. Institution setting. My parents were both teachers, so I am in no way, putting down PS. It is so different being raised with public school was our life. I am so excited to do this though, and I am so glad to have such a great group of internet HS, friends and support. I am thankful for that. It is funny, as I mentioned my whole life since childhood was surounded by PS, and instituational mindset. I was thinking also four hours a day. Thanks again.

We try and start by 9 am with quiet time/devotions by ourselves. Then, we do Spanish and History together. Usually around 10:30 we seperate and do our seperate work, which is, Math, Reading, Grammar, SPelling/Vocab, Science, Writing. My DD that is 13 pretty much does her own and she usually finishes in about 1 1/2 hours. She plows through her work with no breaks. Since we are wrapping up the year, I don't worry too much about it. But, next year I will assign longer assignments for certain subjects, like History especially. SHe reads a lot of books on her own also. My boys usually finish around 1:30, give or take. We also do chores, take care of the baby and they help the 6 yr old with school also... if you add all that in there, then we are usually done by 2:30. I am different than other moms though. If I don't get done by a certain time, I run out of steam and it doesn't get done. I don't daddle with my kids waiting for them to finish an assignment by 4pm, or night time. I put the books away and call it a day when "I" am done.

My boys are 12 and 15, in the 6th and 9th grades, respectively. I can't give you an exact amount of time we spend. We are relaxed homeschoolers, and I am usually working full-time. So I would say about two hours a day on sit-down bookwork, occasionally more if one of the boys gets a bug in his..uh, patootie, and spends an inordinate amount of time on algebra because he found a graphing calculator and needs more fodder for it, lol. But they do spend quite a lot of time on their hobbies and such that count toward schoolwork--Jukido and Karate, fiber arts, reading, etc.

We do not have any set schedule. Some days I fight with my son for 3 hours about doing schoolwork...then when he finally does what I wanted, it takes about 30 minutes. Sometimes he likes what we are doing and the hour I had planned expands into 2-3. Of course, I try to sneak education into things, because my son has decided that he hates school. I think he learned that from others, but we still need to deal with it. We try to do math 5 days a week (30 minutes on task, usually), reading 6 days a week (20-40 minutes on task, but not all at once), science 1-2 times per week, not including science books read as "bed time books" or science videos, history/social studies randomly throughout the year--usually while we are traveling to some of the points of interest, writing 3 times per week...usually disguised as some other task..., critical thinking--daily, computer skills--4-5 times per week.

For sd(15) I sit down with her from about 1pm-3pm to go over material. In the mornings she works on her assignments and uses that time for tests. She works with dh 2 nights a week for about 1/2 each to do her Biology. On the weekend she occassionally needs to do a test or a lab otherwise any work she does on the weekend is to prepare for Monday (and she did not get it done on Friday).

My son, Joe, is 15 and a sophomore in high school. He gets up by 9, has breakfast and reads his Bible. After that, it's up to him what he does when. Currently he has Spanish, Chemistry, Apologetics, and language arts every day. He already finished geometry, but does ACT prep for math most days. He also does art and PE, but not every day. Joe usually takes a long lunch when his dad comes home. Because of that, he rarely gets done before 3, and sometimes is still working until supper time. Time spent with books is around 4-5 hours, he just spreads it out.

My sons are in 4th and 8th grade. My 8th grader does the Abeka dvds, so it takes a little longer because he has to sit through the classes. It takes about five hours including seatwork...

My 4th grader could get done faster than he does if I wasn't helping my older son, but generally it takes a total of three hours for him.

We really approach homeschooling as a lifestyle, so we are 24/ 7. My husband and I are always looking for learning opportunities from the PBS Jane Austen presentations on Sunday night and Friday night guitar lessons with daddy to family outings and gardening projects on the weekend.

Our workbooks are one piece of the pie, for them we usually work about 3-4 hrs. a day. That is Bible, Math, LA, History, Science, and French. But we never stop learning, the kids are constantly reading, no kidding, when they take the dog for a walk one of them brings a National Geographic and reads aloud! Our bathrooms are littered with Dig magazines and various other reading materials .

I do not have a certain amount of time that we spend per subject. I assign work, then they complete it in whatever time frame it takes them. The only thing that I try to have them spend a certain amount of time on is there assigned reading. I like them to read for an hour per day. This is only my two daughters, who are in eighth grade (14yo) and fifth grade (11yo). My eight year old boy is entirely different, as he is not a fluent reader and requires constant supervision.

My eighth grader spends between three and six hours on school per day. That is a very wide range, but it depends on what she's working on. I'd say the average is about five hours per day.

My fifth grader spends between two and three hours per day.

This does not include half an hour of practicing their musical instruments. My 14yo is learning guitar. My 11yo is learning piano.

It averages out to about 3 hours a day. It depends on what they are working on at the time and how focused they are.

I have no idea. Lol! We do like Cynthia--they have work to complete and they finish when they are done. Sometimes we get an earlier or a later start. Sometimes they take forever, and other times they buckle down and get it all done at once.

Trying to figure out how many hours a day we homeschool is about as difficult as trying to figure out how much time I spend cleaning each day, or how much time I spend online. It just depends.

I usually spend three to four hours a day studying different subjects.

The only subject I study everyday is Math because I think it's good to practice Math regularly.

Hello!
This is a good question because everyone always thinks homeschoolers should put in as much time as public school. Not so!

The early elementary grades were about 2 hours not counting playtime and fun stuff in the middle. When my boys were in the middle and upper elementary grades, we took a lot of time to get through the basic courses of Daily Devotions, Bible, Math, Language, History, and Science. Add in PE, Music, and Art or other electives and you can spend a chunk of time depending on their cooperation level. One of the things we did that was so time consuming was to have each boy read the assigned reading for each subject aloud. Then there was seat work and note taking. I had my boys keep notebooks to write down the important points from their assigned reading. This really helped comprehension and retention.

As they got older, they were able to forego the reading aloud and note taking. At the high school level, they did the reading and seat work in about 2 hours. Evenings were spent with Dad being tutored in math and science for an additional 1-2 hours. We used the Alpha Omega Lifepacs.

I'll just give my schedule for our 15 yog and 13 yob. They're very different, so you can see the two "extremes". Dd: up on her own by 7, eat, do chores, read the Jerusalem Post online, then work on "schoolwork" until it's done (usually until about 12 or 1) except on Tuesdays, when she goes to a local prison to share a Bible study (that's an all-day thing). Call that Bible and Spanish. Wednesday and Thursday she goes to the Bible college to help Dh teach English. Call that English and Spanish. Saturdays she goes to town for a French class. Call that Spanish and French. Throughout the week, she practices piano and guitar, writes on her blog, works with her horse and plays volleyball at the church. Pretty much the only 'bookwork' she has is geometry and French. She takes an online English quiz 3 or 4 days a week, just to stay brushed-up on terms. Her personal devotion time is just before bed.

Ds -- Up (3rd wake up call) at 7:30, group Bible study, eat, do chores, work through math work, English grammar/writing and Spanish work (about two hours), group History and word origins class with younger sibs (two hours total), online HTML class and blog work (hour maximum), any class work not finished by 1pm has to be done after lunch. Cuts into "personal time". He's not as "self-directed" and has to be reminded frequently to be kept "on-task". But he's improving!!!

The older they get, the less I'm actually doing in their "teaching". That's the goal, at least!!!

Hope that was helpful!

-- Rebecca

It takes as long as it takes to get it done. That could be 2 hours or it could be 6 hours, depending on the kid and what you have scheduled for the day. It also depends on interruptions from outside sources.

When I first began homeschooling, I tried to do it like public school. I soon found out that did not work for me. I am more relaxed now, and we do school "whenever" we have a moment. We still manage to get most everything done by the end of May even without such a rigid schedule. This year, however, due to me being down in my back for over 2 months during the winter, my high school son is behind in his Geometry. He will have to work during the summer to get caught up. But, hey, it's no big deal. As long as it gets done before he graduates; that's all that matters.

Today, my brother-in-law asked my son when was school out for him. My son replied that he did not know.
I spoke up and said it will be over when he was finished. [image][/image]

I tried to put a lightbulb at the end of my posting, but it did not work. Hence the [image] [image] stuff at the end.
