For those of you who don't know, I'm single and without kids. Well there is a 6th grade girl in our church whose mom has been fairly ill the last couple of years, and sometimes doesn't have the kind of energy it takes to help her daughter with certain kinds of school assignments. Well she had to do this school project (she goes to a christian school, but that is really neither here nor there), where for their DARE program, they have to decorate a shoebox to put questions in. The 3 best shoeboxes in the class go to the teacher's lounge, and then they will pick an overall winner. Well, I picked her up at 4:10, and we didn't get done 'til 9:00p.m., the dining room got trashed(although it's mostly picked up now), it was harder that I thought it would be, but we got a good end result, I thought. We made a little flap so that her opening is a door(and we made a pipe cleaner door handle), and we taped an old musical card of mine under there, so that when her box opens it plays music. There is a dog picture on the door. Around the door, she put hearts and the letters DARE in the 4 corners with rhinestones. On the edges, on the top, we put gold pipe cleaners like this:uuuuu(except imagine the tops connected), and then she put a red stripe under that. Oh, by the way, we covered the whole box in white before she added the other stuff. I am exhausted, but I also feel so good about helping her, and enjoyed that little taste of motherhood, and I hope her box gets a chance of winning!

If you're not busy today, my son has to do a poster about sharks and my daughter has to make a display board about Helen Keller. Just kidding, it is fun, though. That's great that you were able to help; I'm sure the mom appreciates it. I enjoy doing this kind of stuff too but I often wonder how moms that work manage - or being ill or something like her situation. It takes a lot out of you sometimes and sometimes you just need help!!

Hey my kiddos have a few scout projects to do too! Wanna help! Just Kidding! Glad you had a great time helping! Even if she doesn't win anything - YOU made a difference in a child's life just by giving of your time and energy! Blessings, Garsy

Thanks for the positive comments guys! She just stopped by (don't worry, her mother was driving) to tell me, her box, DID in fact get picked as one of the top three! To me, the hardest part was balancing ideas of what I would have done with the the vision of what SHE desired..after all, it's her project. I would have done stuff with fabric and buttons, but ya know, it's her project, not mine, lol.

That's awesome. I love helping my nieces and nephews with their homework and school assignments. I'm definitely learning though, as you mentioned, how to balance their visions and their learning with my insane impatience of wanting to yell out the answer for them!

My kids have learned to tell me to BACK OFF when it comes to those sorts of projects! They are however grateful that their Mommy is a scrapbooker! Mommy has lots and lots of goodies and neat tools they can use for their projects! Blessings, Garsy
