I figured the parenting forum was the best bet, as other pregnant (or pregnant at one time) women might sympathize with me... I'm 2 months pregnant and I really would like some sour dill pickles. I have had no luck with that so far... I mean the sour, sour, curl-your-toes, ingredients are "vinegar, salt, cucumbers, and dill" kind of sour pickles. Like generic hamburger dills, only crunchy whole ones (preferably). I really would prefer not to buy a jar of everything labelled "pickle" and go through them, for obvious reasons ;) I'm in a pretty big city so it's likely I can find the brand if I know what to get, but I need to know what to get. My mom used to buy them when we were growing up in a big 3-gallon jar thing, but I can't remember what brand they were (I think they were some sort of random generic, which isn't really helpful...) Any suggestions? hehe

Yeah, that's why I want whole ones... the biting into them is more satisfying, and I know when I need to stop, rather than eating the entire jar of hamburger dills...

Why not go to the farmer's market, buy a bunch of pickling cukes, and making your own, as sour as you like?

Vlasic has a good jar of whole 3" dill pickles. My mil quit making dill pictures when my husband and his older brother were teenagers. It was because of them! She would have a large crock in the kitchen while she was making them and the cucumbers were soaking in the brine. My husband and his older brother would take one when each of them went by so the pickles never got done.

I've tried the Vlasic ones, they're not sour enough I'm afraid. I've made my own pickles before, but right now I just don't have the equipment or the room...

Find yourself a REAL Italian or Jewish deli...get the ones out of the barrel. Claussen is the closest, but definitely not the "real thing". I remember the ones that if you bit into them, the spices and garlic would clear your sinuses and make your eyes water...yum! Heck, I'm not pregnant and I'd love a few! NDY

This isn't quite pickles, but it uses cucumber, vinegar, salt and pepper. You can make it as sour as you want! Slice fresh cucumber into a small bowl. Pour vinegar, diluted with water to taste, over cucumbers. Add salt and pepper (and ice cubes if desired). I've had this served within a short time of making, but I'm sure you could marinate a while. The recipe is designed to keep the cucumber in full crunch. It's also good with tomatoes. My in-laws serve it using cucumbers and/or tomatoes just picked from their garden. Zhi--In your case the jar is half-full of brine, but there aren't enough pickles!

My mom always made that with sliced sweet onions in it, too. Oh, man, now my mouth is watering...

I had about given up on the search with Classen as a fallback position (close, but just not quite!), but today I was in King Soopers grocery shopping. I checked the pickle aisle again, nothing... but when I turned the corner, there's the "large goods" aisle, and there in that aisle is an unassuming-looking gallon jar of pickles from "First Choice" (some sort of generic) labelled "Whole Dill Pickles". "A gallon jar is kind of huge if I hate them", I thought. "But, on the other hand, if I LIKE them... and it DOES look a lot like the kind my mom got ages ago." I checked the label, nothing about sugar (big red flag, if you want a sour pickle). And, the entire gallon jar was only $4, so I figured I could throw it away if I hated them. First thing I got home I tried one... sure enough, I have an entire gallon of crispy, vinegarry, curl-your-toes-sour, dilly, amazing pickles in my fridge now. Hopefully it will last me the week. My hubby is laughing at me, but I'm happy. *munch munch*
