Dd (8) was complaining of an upset/hurting tummy off and on at the end of the school year. When I took her to the pediatrician, she suspected a UTI or the beginnings of one and put her on an antibiotic. The test came back negative but she finished the prescription and seemed better for several weeks. I also wondered if she was just kinda stressed out. But it's started up again and so now I've been wondering if it's a gas pain (she's never actually thrown up). And I said something one day about maybe she'd eaten too much cheese - so now she's afraid of cheese! And this is a child who, despite my best efforts, has just about lived on cheese most of her life (not really but that's how it seems - we force her to eat other things but anything other than cheese is just about only eaten by force). She was at a friend's house for a sleepover and just had to come home because it was hurting again. She's hardly eaten all day because she wouldn't eat mac n cheese for dinner (but told the friend's mom she wasn't hungry, not that she doesn't want to eat cheese now). So just about all she's had this afternoon was ice cream. The weird symptom now is that tonight and one time a few nights ago, she also said her heart was racing. It really seemed to be beating fast but only for a minute. And both times with the tummy ache. I'm debating whether I need to wait about a week and journal what she's eating and when this happens or just take her back to the doctor ASAP. ...What do you think these things could add up to? I'm thinking it had nothing to do with a UTI but the antibiotic did seem to help. But now the racing heartbeat. I'm perplexed.

I would journal what she is eating, and then take her to the doctor. If she is lactose int. then they are going to want to see a food journal anyway... Oh, and my lactose issues don't make me vomit, they give me issues on the "other end".

I have never heard of racing heart being a symptom of lactose intolerance. And if she is able to eat ice cream and other milk products, it probably has nothing to do with the cheese. I would take her back to the doctor. Sometimes too much cheese *can* cause constipation, but you need to address the fear of cheese right away, IMO. Sit down with her and ask why she won't eat it (if she hasn't already said) and then explain that if it is from the cheese it is from too much cheese and that a normal amount of cheese should be okay. Of course, I am saying this with the assumption that her symptoms didn't go away when she stopped eating the cheese! You might also want to let her know if it was from too much cheese, that other foods can help- like eating fruit. Tara P

Definitely start keeping a food journal...get your daughter to help you so she can be involved in getting herself better. RE: the racing heart...did she have caffeine and/or a lot of sugar that day? This is a long shot, but I get the same thing because I have mitral valve prolapse and too much caffeine is actually how we discovered it. Just keep an eye on her intake. I haven't heard of that being a symptom of lactose intolerance, but she may also be having anxiety, which can do the same thing.

When she first said her heart was racing, she had had two cokes over the course of that day - which used to be relatively normal for her (us) but is something she hasn't had in several months. So I thought of that. Yesterday she had the root beer but then it was several hours later that her heart was racing. It's weird. And back before school ended, I really thought it had to be anxiety-related but she just can't be anxious about anything now so I don't know. I'm going to just track everything for a few days because I think we'll still just be guessing to take her back to the doctor without at least having done that.

she *could* be having anxiety now, even if not in school. Is there any stress in your lives? Any changes recent or upcoming? Any problems with friends? There are all sorts of reasons she could have anxiety apart from school. I doubt that her issues are from lactose intolerance, as Ryanne said... everyone I've known has had issues "on the other end" not with vomitting. Plus, she's eating ice cream and such, so I doubt that. I would look at her diet overall, and keep a journal, and if she says that her heart is racing, try to get a count of what the heartbeat is, and record that too... and try to think of anything going on in her life that might be a stressful thing for her. Then take it all to her doctor.

That could definitely be the sugar/caffeine (although root beer doesn't contain caffeine, but still lots of sugar), I'd keep an eye on it. Cut out soda and see if she has any more palpitations.

There are all sorts of reasons she could have anxiety apart from school. Not right now. We are totally laying low this summer; it's the first summer in several years I've not been working and completely stressed out myself. A few months ago, we were all pretty stressed from all sides - end of school, dh's job was up in the air, issues with friends, all kinds of things seemed to hit at once. That's one big reason we're taking the summer to just recoup and focus on just having fun! But last week was Vacation Bible School every evening and, while I don't think stress or anxiety could be issues right now, she was pretty exhausted, I think. quote:

Exhaustion and sugar (maybe caffeine) do seem to make the most sense at this point. Doesn't it depend on the brand of root beer whether or not it has caffeine? I'm not sure. But sugar is definitely a problem in her diet!!!! I'm journalling - so far it's an eye opener. I know her diet is bad but seeing it in writing makes me feel like the world's worst mom!! Whether this is the source of her problem or not (it can't be helping), her diet has got to change!!
