Finding the time and the money for lessons just isn't an option. Can anyone recommend any software to help learn the basics of the bass guitar ? We generally play contemporary christian with the cords over the lyrics. I guess more learning where the notes are on the fretboard is what I need for the time being, but I am wanting to learn the insturment inside and out too. Starting off with a Peavey Milestone II 4 string and a small Fender amp.

Hey Fatheroffive... I am a father of four. So I'm right there with you. You have made a wise choice in learning to play the bass... don't let any of the so called guitarist tell you otherwise! THE BASS IS THE MOTHER OF ALL INSTRUMENTS! A couple of things to check out: on line bass lessons On here there is a scale finder and various other lessons and tips and tid-bits you should find very helpful. Marcus Miller victor wooten Victor Wooten-Amazing Grace EDIT- It appears that the link to Victor Wooten Amazing Grace may not be working. Please check it out on YOUTUBE, it is very much worth watching the master at his best.

The other thing I meant to add to my previous post is to learn the blues scales if you are playing modern P&W, the basic three chord progression then try and learn your scales. I mean learn as many as you can, but if you aren't intending to expand your bass playing beyond Sunday morning. Learning your scales however will pretty much teach you where all the notes are on the fret board and will get you the most familure with your bass.

If it wasn't for the bass players holding it down, the guitarist would mindlessly solo 4 ever.... It would be just one long ride through the Mixolydian and or pentantonic scales. Hey and what about the singers... can they even read music??? Much less show up to a gig on time to help set up...

Even when playing chords on the guitar, it's the bass notes that drive the harmonies (look at all those slash chords we have to deal with). I love to listen to guys like Miller and Wooten but for some good solid playing, check out anything that from the great late Jackie Street. He was a well recorded session bassist who can be heard on a variety of CCM recordings. Jackie passed away earlier this year, so you wont have to go too far back to hear his work.

Thanks for that appreciation of bass players! I wouldn't profess to want a world without that wonderful instrument the six (or 12) string guitar! Sometimes I feel that bass players respect guitar players more than the other way around although I definitely wouldn't put you in that category!

Yes! Thanx for those encouraging words Starplayer. I do have to say that Jackie Street was a phenom. of a bass player, a true master of the instrument. You did not hear him shread up alot and soloing much like Miller or Wooten but he definately knew how to hold down the low end of a song and move you and groove you. I actually did not hear about his death until now. I pray that God rests his soul, and hopefully He is up there in heaven now and every time the thunder rolls, you know he is playing his bass for God.

I am primarily a guitar player, but I absolutely have more fun playing bass. The thing to remember is that even though a bass shares the notes and strings with a guitar: It should play a completely different role in the band. Think of it more as a percussion type instrument. A solid bass player and drummer that work together will set the tone for the band. You can either make or break a band, really. Listen to some old Elvis Costello & the Attractions or Joe Jackson Band to hear some really excellent bass work. Bruce Thomas (EC and the Attractions) and Graham Mabey (Joe Jackson Band) are some of the best, unsung, bass players. They keep the rythm tight while adding tasty little hooks that keep you from noticing that a lot of times there's not much guitar going on in the songs. Bass is a fun instrument. Honestly, there are too few good bass players out there and so if you learn it right: You'll be in demand! Heck, I've made more money in studio and sit in gigs playing bass than I do guitar.

Bass is a fun instrument Wassup Hayseed! Been a while. Actually you are quite correct. The bass is extremely fun to play and mostly it is very versitile as an instrument. My brother is a drummer and I am a bass player, so we have always had a natrual groove between the two of us. We still play together after about 15 or so years although now with wives and kids admitedly less so now than before. I still look forward for the weekends we we get to jam...
