Obama-siah has finally agreed to a debate with McCain (well sortof). Is this going to really help?
Details are:
Give me a break!

**Sarcasm** That sounds like a real winner **End sarcasm** I don't think that will do anything except maybe get Rick Warren back into the limelight again.

I thought the re-run of the program last night on TV of the woman held at gunpoint who read some of Rick's PDl to an armed felon holding her in her home and intent on killing her was pretty decent limelight since it calmed the man and, then, he released her unharmed and gave up to police without a struggle.
What was your point again?

Mr. Warren, the author of the best-selling book “The Purpose-Driven Life,” said he had called each man personally to invite him to his event, which will focus on how they make decisions and on some of Mr. Warren’s main areas of focus, like AIDS, poverty and the environment....
“Since I’m their friend, I’m not going to give them any gotcha questions,” Mr. Warren said, adding that a typical query would be, “What’s the most difficult decision you’ve had to make, and how did you make it?”
I hope this interview is posted on their website or broadcasted as I look forward to hearing Obama and McCain talk about issues rather than just calling each flip-floppers. I hope they both use this opportunity wisely rather than use it as an opportunity to smear their opponent.

Personally, I think there is a lot of potential for there to be some actual in depth discussion here rather than the typical canned formats that seem to dominate so many debates.

It would be a potentially-intriguing way to stage a debate. And frankly, I think it would benefit Obama more as he tends to think on his feet better than McCain.

I am not so sure that is true - Obama unscripted often sounds like a jumbled mess. And ironically, McCain sounds worse when he is reading a teleprompter.

I agree that McCain's strong suit in public speaking does tend to be the Town Hall format.
However, I've seen more than a few video clips this summer of McCain being asked questions about past positions/votes on his campaign bus, and staring blankly into space as he struggles to recall what the reporter was asking about.
Not really a strong image to present to the public.

The problem of course is that we rarely see Obama stumbling along trying to make a point that wasn't a typical talking point, not because it hasn't happened, but because the press is enamored with him and seems unable to show him in a bad light.
I am not sure what those incidences (in either case) have to do with ability to be the President.
I do know that if McCain says, "My friends" more than twice during this debate (or any other) I may throw my tv out the window.

Actually, I've seen more than a few of these Obama stumbles reported by the media - a recent example being Obama leaving that recent rally early (the one where he was supposed to hit up the crowd for donations to help rescue Hillary's campaign debt, and had to come back, halt the music, and make the pitch as everyone was ready to go home).

Yeah, ten bucks says a few college campuses will be using this annoying habit by McCain as a new drinking game this fall (e.g. every time McCain sez "my friends" at a campaign rally, everyone at the table downs a shot of Jagermeister).

My point, and I probably should have elaborated on it, was that I was not terribly impressed with his PDL book, nor some of his other stuff. Therefore, I didn't think the debate would really be much of anything substantive.
As far as the TV show, I didn't see it (either time), so if it worked on TV, it must have been good.

What network was that on? It sounds like I might have been interested.
Anyway, I forgot to add in my post that, if the debate can bring anything to light about Obama's real views, it would be well worthwhile.

It was a documentary about a real event. The woman, a new believer in Christ, thought she was going to die because that's what the angry felon had told her more than once.

Obama has a stockpile of dumb things to say when he's not following a teleprompter. Just a few off the top of my head:
- Memorial day is to honor the living
- 10,000 people killed by a tornado
- The Japanese dropped "a bomb" on Pearl Harbor.
- Children with asthma need a breathalyser.
- "Typical white people" are racially ignorant.
- "Sweetie" is a term used for women journalists.
- Unborn children are a "problem."
- White people in rural areas love with their guns and their religion.
If it wasn't for the media propping him up Clinton would have won the nomination. Their cooperation is his biggest asset.
