I am seriously considering buying one in the next few weeks to supplement my running/walking outdoors.. I will let you know what I find.. obviously, wear a helmet . I would recommend getting good sunglasses.. the cycling glasses are more of the wrapround style .. you do not want to be caught in glare and miss something. I would ride by the lakes and there is glare off the water and off other bikes, etc.. plus your eyes would be protected by dust, and any pebbles that could fly up. There is a definite difference between "cheap" sunglasses and "good sunglasses" .. the clarity is much better on .. plus sports sunglasses won't slip if you sweat and are rainproof and shouldn't fog up. I have a pair of Oakleys and they are worth the price.

Does anyone ride Mountain Bikes? YES! Do you ride trails? Yes, they're called single track What do you wear? biking clothes, go to a bike store or order online...yes, I wear padded bike shorts. ZOIC is the brand I personally like best. Search for an online store. Shorts, top, socks, shoes, helmet, gloves, get a Camelback backpack for long rides and it holds a lot of water and snackies!!! ride for fun? with a passion! Or is this way you get your excerise? YES TOO! LOL It's a great benefit! Have fun!!!!

ORIGINAL: fluffmonkey Does anyone ride Mountain Bikes? Do you ride trails? What do you wear? ride for fun? Or is this way you get your excerise? Mountain biking is an AB-FAB way to get excercise- I personaly own several, and try to ride several times a week. You can spend a few hundred to a few thousand on a bike. I would suggest steering clear of wal-mart/target/costco style bikes, as they are usually heavy and not put together well (not by a trained professional). Your local bike shop should be able to help you choose a decent starter bike- if you go and they are snobby or trying to up sell you go to a different one. Basic necessities- 1-helmet 2-gloves 3-water bottle/hydration pack 4-sunglasses/eye protection you can do without bike specific shirt/shorts/shoes until you really get the bug- you can pick these up on ebay for cents on the dollar or try jensonusa.com or pricepoint.com or universalcycles.com (each have their pros/cons I like pricepoint as it is in LA and ships to socal area fast, more expensive stuff from universalcycles as there is no tax) Let me know where you are located, what type of bike you are looking for, etc. I can help you out. Riding is a great hobby, exploring Gods creation, quite, clean air- WOOHOO show me the TRAIL!!

I forgot about this thread. I bought a Schwinn women's mountain 21 speed comfort bike with the front suspension. I have ridden several times on the bike path and I am getting an annual park permit so I can start on some trails near me and another bike path that goes pretty far. i have everything except the gloves. Haven't needed them yet. I'm only up 4 miles. LOL

Definitely steer clear of the Wal-Mart/discount store bikes! (Unless you want to spend the time and money replacing everything on them, which is what I did with mine.) The last place you want a bike problem is in the middle of no where. I still have a MTB, but I don't ride it currently. I've had it about 12 years and like I said, everything on it has been replaced. I prefer a hardtail as opposed to full suspension. Get some gloves. Make sure you have a good seat and no, fatter and more padded isn't better. I promise. I mostly used mine for commuting and I recently replaced it with a better commuter bike. I'm trying to decide if I want to keep it or not. And cycling is just like any other exercise. Your outcome will depend on the time and effort you put into it.

Do the cheaper (heavier) bikes make that much of a difference when you ride? I have only gone mountain biking a few times, but have considered buying one.

It depends, if you are just riding for fitness then it won't make too much of a difference , but if you are racing then a lighter bike will give you an advantage in speed. The better mountain bikes have a suspension which will help you out on the trails. Mountain bikes will be heavier than road bikes. Mines about 35-40 pounds. Road bikes can weigh very little but you are paying more for a lighter bike. Definitely get a bike from a local bike shop.. I just got the basic mountain bike (mine was 279) but the higher end bikes like Trek started at 350.00 for the road/hybrid type bikes. But they'll last forever if you maintain it and the higher end shops will do the first tune up free.

One question: When you take your bike out on trails in the middle of no where, will you feel better knowing the bike mechanic at your LBS put it together or the 16-year-old at Wal-Mart?
