I am thinking I'll take my ipod in with me when I deliver and am looking for some ideas for music to play during labor/delivery.

I have some affirmation stuff from the Hypnobabies program that I am going to play too, but I can only stand that stuff for so long

I'm looking for suggestions in all genres of music, but could you please list the artist, song title and genre? Thank you!!

I am planning on using my sports armband - I am thinking it will be the least likely to get in my way.
PICTURE - does anyone who has used an iPod have any suggestions or thoughts on that?

Do your hospital rooms have CD or DVD players? You might be able to do it that way also, I know ours had CD players.

I dont know about our rooms, but part of my thinking was to have the headphones so I could concentrate (wanting to go med free) and block out my family (who are notorious for 'visiting' during labor). I know for me, music through earphones helps me to escape from that around me and focus.

Yeah... I don't think I would have wanted anything "on" me though, it was bad enough having all the monitors. But then, our nurses knew that the only family members allowed in my room were my mother and my husband. Everyone else was told to come visit us at home.

Yeah, thats just something I'll have to play by ear (haha I made a pun). Our nurses are pretty hands off (for which I am thankful) so I really dont think they'd run too much interference. Hubby will, but I'd prefer to just remove myself mentally from all that going on, thats my plan anyway.

As far as the sports band, I have one and dont really like it, I have a lanyard as well. For me I plan to take both, and just see how it goes.

Ryanne - I don't know if our rooms do or not, but like Erin I want it to help me to concentrate and stay focused.
I am loosely following the Hypnobabies plan, which focuses on staying calm and relaxed. Music helps me do that, and tuning out from the rest of the world

I am going to have a heplock placed to keep them happy, but I am not going to be hooked up to anything unless something happens to warrant being hooked up to something, so an armband shouldn't be a big deal.

I'm hoping for that, but not holding my breath. The monitoring was necessary last time because of my blood pressure.

I will be at home so I am making a playlist on iTunes. I don't have an iPod.

So far I have:
You Raise Me Up by Selah
I Will Lift My Eyes by Bebo Norman
Thy Mercy My God by Caedmon's Call
How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds by Matthew Perryman Jones
What Wondrous Love is This by Matthew Smith

I am trying to think of more to add

Erin, just wanted to say that most nurses WILL run interference for you if you ask. It's part of their job.

Back to the regularly scheduled thread.....

John Michael Talbot and Michael Card. I wish I'd had time to listen to some of their stuff. Scriptural and soothing. The other one I wish I could have listened to was my cassette of Psalms done by Vineyard music. Especially Ps 121.

I remember reading a birth story from Israel, and as the mom was pushing the baby out, she, her husband, her doula, and eventually the hospital staff were singing Ps. 121.

Yarg. Just wrote a whole post. Opened new window. Lost post. BAH!

My m/w's are encouraging me to have a selection of music that can both 'pick me up' as well as calm me down. I don't really listen to a lot of music, though, so I don't know what to have on hand!! All I know is it will definitely include Africa by Toto cuz it's like my favourite song EVER!!! LOL I LOVE 80's music. "... Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti"?? Great lyrics.

Seriously, though, I'll probably have a selection of some praise and worship music (I love Robin Mark's Revival in Belfast II and the Newsboys' Devotion) as well as some instrumental classical music (ie. piano or symphony music). I secretly wish I could be like THIS during labour ... but I won't be

Love the video, Kim! Now if I could just get my husband to learn to play the guitar I got for him over a year ago.... I guess he still has a couple months.

LOL - you're doing better than me! I'd have to teach Brad to play the guitar NOW ... and I'd have to teach him to sing

That is amazingly beautiful! Worship music is so soothing to me... When I was in the hospital for wicked high blood pressure and a lung infection my youth pastor/worship leader sat in my room and played guitar and sang worship music with a friend for several hours. Several of the nurses commented on how it lowered my blood pressure when they had trouble getting me to respond to meds. I was pretty much zonked from the infection.

I think anything that is praise based would be great...and there are so many different styles of that that can really get you hoppin' and calmed down.....

Don't be surprised though if you forget it....I had music all picked out for my first two..but when it came down to getting to business.....I was to busy focusing to worry about music..and in fact it would have irritated me at that time.

ditto on telling nurses that once you start labor NO ONE is to visit except hubby (and anyone you WANT to visit)..they can make it sound quite official that no one can be there.

We don't have any family around (they are 12 + hours away) so there is no fear about people popping in to see us!! The doula and Paul will be the only ones there. I can't imagine people just "popping in" for fun - what horrible manners!!

(Though I should add, last year two people "popped in" to see me when I was admitted with Judah, but it was because Paul was hours away with work. I had known these people three weeks - from church - and I actually thought it was really, really sweet of them to come by. In total I had three near strangers in my room for several hours - one of them had driven me in - and their thoughtfulness and kindness in being there and waiting with me for Paul to come meant a lot. They were all clear that they would leave any time I wanted, and any time the doctor came in the man left the room ... having a man "pop in" was a little odd, but he and Paul had bonded, so I think he was stepping in for Paul at that time... I dunno. But I thought it was sweet near strangers would be so supportive.)

the only time I have had people "pop in" during labor was during the first two times. My parents the first time (they started heading our way when my labor started and got there after I had gone to the hospital...so they "popped in" but mostly stayed in the waiting room. In fact my mom wouldn't even pop her head in the door...she doesn't like it when one of her kids is in situations like hospitals and such. So just my dad popped in. The second was with my second. A nurse friend from our church worked at the hospital I was having her in. Her shift had ended and she came by to check on me....at the right time.....she was there for the last check when Hannah all of a sudden crowned, and within 15 minutes was born. So since she was there she got to see the birth.
Other then that I have never had people unannounced just go out of their way to go to the hospital and pop in on me.

Paul is getting some music put on some little electronic device today for me/us in the hospital. (I am not sure what his device is...but he plays games on it and listens to music on it all the time...I am out of touch...lol)
