Actually it is my friends daughter but still I am friends with her daughter too. She had joint custody with the father. Well the last two times she picked up her 3 year old daughter for the weekend her hands and bottom were covered in bruises. So they took the baby to the sheriff's department. DFS is now investigating the father for abuse. He does not think it was abuse since he was only following the Pearls book To train up a child. He thinks it is only discipline.

Which can easily lead to abuse if not tempered with some common sense. But I'm glad she had the kids now, and I hope she can get permanent custody. It's such a shame he tricked her into getting custody, but hopefully things can be set right now.

Anything that leaves marks or bruises is abuse. Period.

I have read that book. I wouldn't follow all of it, but even if a person did, they would not leave bruises. He's just using it as an excuse!

My friends little girl said that they had different sticks laid out and she had to pick which one she was going to get hit with. Sometimes they would hit the tops of her hands and other times her bottom.

Now that is from the book, actually, to have sticks out in plain sight for switching purposes.

They recommend flexible 'sticks', which is not what this sounds like. A glue stick is what I frequently see parents use, and it stings but you would not be able to leave a bruise unless you were seriously hitting very hard. The parents I know smack themselves on the leg with it before switching their child just to remind themselves how little does the trick.

The Pearls have some good idea's. The problem is that they put this stuff out there and parents who get the wrong idea from the book end up abusing their children. I cannot imagine how hard you have to hit a child to cause bruises.

Glad your friend is getting custody...what a tough battle.

I live in Missouri. There is also a show on Tru TV it used to be court tv but it is called the principals office. One of the episodes was kids getting a spanking by the principal. I do not know what state that school was in. People sometimes forget that spanking is legal leaving bruises is not.
