We haven't had a garden in several years, but we tilled up a 30' X 40' area this year in our 1-acre field and started planting. Things were going ok until the other morning I found that 5 of my 6 bush bean plants were suddenly completely gone -- as if they had never even been there! There are lots of holes (about 1 - 1 1/2 inches in diameter) all over the garden area, with some shallow tunnels as well as deep. This morning I found that one of my swiss chard plants was completely gone. Whatever is eating them seems to be moving down this one row of plants. Also, many of my tomato plants are struggling, and it seems like they are tipped over from underneath. What am I dealing with here? Moles? Voles? Gophers? What can I do about it? Thanks!

Several years ago we had ground squirrels and gophers. My local nursery recommended treatments that took care of them in about a week. Unfortunately it involved killing them which I realize some people aren't into.

I realize they will have to be killed. What did your nursery recommend?

Try pinwheels...those cheesy plastic lawn decorations that spin in the wind. They make a sound that transmits in the ground and annoys the moles.

Some people say that they don't work, but they did work for us. So it's at least worth a try.

They gave me pellets to put in all the holes. The critters crave water so I had to take away all the water sources which caused them to die. They stay in the ground so you don't have to worry about disposal. They also had a thing that looked like a flare. You strike it and put it in the hole and immediately cover with dirt. If you see smoke coming out of other holes, you cover it until you see no smoke coming out. They worked for me.

Used kitty litter! I swear it works!!

Take a small amount of cat litter - after kitty has used it and stuff it down in the hole! Darn vermin will leave and not comeback! It's worked for us for a couple years now! We have also used the pellets that Szaftoo used, with some success. The reason we've had so many problems with them this year is that it has been so wet.

Blessings,

Garsy

Just be careful if you use the pellets - I believe they contain strychnine, which is obviously poisonous to humans (and other animals, eg domestic pets) as well as to gophers.

Put a stick of juicy fruit gum down the hole.
The moles are attracked to it and when they eat it it will kill em.
Other kinds of gum dont work guess the moles a picky about the gum they chew!
Know this sounds nuts but this is what I was told to do by some oldtimers and it worked for the moles!!

Do you remember what the name of the pellets were? Anything in particular that might help with squirrels? Most of the squirrels around here seem to hang out more in the trees (and digging holes around my plants). They are such a nuisance! I have also seen some holes, but I think those are more from chipmunks, as I've seen a few of those around too. Boy they sure move fast too!
