Analysts are beginning to draw parallels between Sen. Obama's remarks tying the bitternes of small town Pennsylvanians over job loss and their alledged, subsequent, reliance on religion (amongst other things) and Karl Marx's famous quote: "religion is the opiate of the masses."

USA Today (amongst many) has the original story on the remarks here:

Were Obama's words about folks in small towns controversial?

I find the remarks incredibly disturbing. Consider that the list includes a thinly veiled reference to homophobia and racism, ("antipathy to people who aren't like them, anti-immigrant sentiment"). We would all agree that those are social ills at best, and immoral, evil, predispositions at worst. It seems unlikely that he proposes a list, but only considers one of elements of the list to be the really "bad" thing, and the others good. It is far more likely that he sees ALL of the items on the list as something between social ill and immoral predisposition. In that case, a general mistrust of the state (which leads one to "cling" to gun ownership rights) is immoral; a fundimentalist Christian belief system is immoral; homophobia and racism are immoral (I agree there); American isolationism, both in regard to economics and immigration, is immoral. I frankly believe that Sen Obama views all of these issues in the same light, as unacceptable social ills that must be eradicated in order for people to see reality, and subsequently stand up and revolt. Karl Marx would have been proud.

I dislike Obama's remarks as well, but Marx? I don't know about that. . .

Well, it is not me making the link. I heard it on Dennis Prager's show this afternoon. Considering he studied Marx and Russian Socialism extensively in his post-grad work, I consider him quallified to make the link.

I understand. I just think it's a bit of a stretch none-the-less. Sometimes all studying does is make one an educated buffoon.

That being said, as a small-town person, I own guns for hunting, not for being afraid of the state. I would say that hunting and target shooting is pretty common. . .

Religion. . . well, we are just old-fashioned. We haven't allowed liberal media to sway us from our roots.

And I don't know so much about the other sentiments he speaks of. I've never ran into much of that.

Well, the other sentiments are primarily racism (or any kind of "hate" for those not like us) and American isolationism. I agree that people don't generally turn to those things to help "explain their frustrations". But some people do blame immigration, outsourcing, free trade, and pretty much anyone they don't like for their woes.

Here is the fundimentally disturbing point to me - Sen Obama puts racism and homophobia on a par with religious conservatism. I truly believe he believes religious conservatives are as evil as racists and homophobes. (In fact, he probably believes they are one in the same) After all, his pastor believes that and has preached it openly. Why should we not believe he believes it?
