How many of those in this forum that participate in some fashion with the Praise and Worship at your church get paid for doing so? I have played the bass on the P&W teams of both of the churches I have attended since I was 15 (I'm now 34) and have never been paid for doing so. I love to play so it is nothing, but I actually had no idea that some churches pay their worship teams... I heard this for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I was floored.

. . . . ...... I was floored when I found out that Pastors get paid!!! lol! My father was a pastor while I was growing up.... he worked 3 jobs in order to start his church and get it going.... I think it really depends on how large the church is and their budget..... the church I just moved out of has about 4 or 5 paid pastors.... one is a music pastor....

I'm a firm believer that musicians should be paid for their time and talent, and I applaud the churches that do so......

I know at my church the choir director gets paid and then they hire some pro musicians for Xmas and Easter. They also pick up extra coin for weddings, funerals, etc. I don't see anything wrong with it because with all the extracurricular musical work required (at large churches especially) you need someone full time.

I would love to make a lilttle bit for my time and effort. I put quite a bit of time into it and our worship team has often been asked to go to other churches and play for them during revivals and such and I never see a dime, not for gas, not for food and some of these trips have been 2 and 3 hours away, full tank of gas types of trips, actually, one was a stay over night trip in the Florida Keys, which is about 4 to 5 hours from here. I know I'll be rewarded in heaven and again, I LOOOOVE to play so it ain't really a factor for me but the thought would sometimes be nice maybe a little "hey we took up and offering for you and here's 100 bucks to split between ya for gas" would be nice.

I'm going to disagree with some of the posts on here. If you are glorifying God with your talents, why should you be paid? If you are expecting to be paid and are playing on a Praise Team, then what are your motives in doing it, to use your talents for God or to get paid for it? If you are using your talents for God, you shouldn't expect to be paid. What happened to volunteerism in the church? Why should you expect to be paid? Doesn't make sense to me. A church I know pays people to play on their Praise team and that is just plain wrong.

I was offered a small salary at a past congregation where I was worship leader but turned it down several times. I agree with redeemedsaint and that is why I refused. However, a good friend of mine was on staff at a largish church with a whole orchestra/prasie band and a 25-30 voice choir and he had to do vocal and instrumental arrangements for all of them and wrote a bunch of our worship songs (some of which I am still doing 20 years later) and THAT was easily a full time job. I do not see how anyone could do that while holding down a secular job and still have time for a family.

If you are expecting to be paid and are playing on a Praise Team, then what are your motives in doing it, to use your talents for God or to get paid for it? So! With this thought, then God doesn't give his children talents that can be used as a career? I mean with this kind of thinking, I should work at selling title insurance for free because I'm good at it and feel as if God has given me the talent to do so. I don't expect to get paid for it though, the music thing. I have volunteered my time for worship services for 18 years now. Saturday nights, Sunday afternoons, every Sunday morning, some Wednesdays, and again doing some side work for our worship team at other churches on several occassions. I have played also on the secular side and can say with honesty that there is fun playing for a bunch of hootin and hollerin fans that may be under the influence of some sort of beverage and then there is being there to assist in bringing a group of people into the worshipful spirit of God, and that money can't buy. I enjoy that beyond playing for drunks any day.

Jesus told him, "If you seek perfection, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor. You will then have treasure in heaven. Afterward come back and follow me." Matthew 19:21 I guess we are ALL content with being less than perfect!
