We have a neighborhood cat that has adopted our back porch. It sits on it during the day and hides underneith it at night. It's a very gentle and tame and wants to come in the house. We have a Parakeet, and my wife is alergic to pet dander, so we can't bring it in the house.
We tried not feeding it and maybe it would go away. No such luck. The cats markings are all mixed up so you can't tell what kind it is. My question is, can a cats territorial instincts be past down from one cat generation to the next?
About fifteen years ago we had two male grey tabby cats from the same litter. Eventially they excaped throughout the neighborhood and for years we saw a lot of grey tabby cats around the neighborhood. Could the territorial instincts be passed on from our two original cats to this particular cat?

If so, then you trained the kitty to come sit on your porch, it has nothing to do with instincts being passed down through the generations! Added to which, sounds like kitty found a safe and secure place to settle.
Do you want kitty to go away or are you happy with it being there (so long as it stays outside)?

We had never fed the cat before, but now I think we are stuck with him. I couldn't bear to see the cat go hungry, so now we are feeding him. Why he adopted our back porch i have no clue. We named him Charlie!

on the pet dander allergy....try this and see if it works (and let me know if you do try it, whether it works or not...I am curious...I have known a few it worked for and one it didn't). A friend of mine back a few years ago owned a natural vitamin/natural remedies type of store...and she swore by this method.
get vitamin E capsules and break one or two open into the cats food every day. She said it changes something in their dander that is the typical cause of most allergies to them.

This sounds like a good idea, thanks. This stupid cat wanted to come in so bad last night he was climbing on our front screen door. We do have a box for him on the back porch.
I don't think our Parakeet "Chirpy Bird" would appreciate a cat in the house either.

Please do NOT add vitamin E to the cat's food. Cat food is perfectly balanced for a cat's nutritional needs. Vitamin E is a fat soluable vitamin and will build up in the cat's body, potentially building to a toxic level.

You can actually buy wipes to use on kitty that cuts down on dander ~ I've never used them but they're meant to be good...

Sound like you kitty has been a house cat and must gotton lost or dummped so sad! If you can maybe find it a good home or try to retarin to be out side only by playing and care fro it on the porch (alway wshing you hands and cleaning off the cat hair beore going around the wife. Check to see if it a he if been fixed, or you may have more little ones!

What may have happened is that your yard may be the only area not already marked by another cat. They are territorial. If your yard is in a "territorial marking vacuum," your cat friend may have moved in.
One of the strategies of "catch and release neutering" is that cities have determined that disease free neutered cats keep dangerous rabid flea-bags away. Therefore, they are caught, neutered and vaccinated, and released back into the neighborhood.
Your cat-friend probably will likely live quite happily on the porch. Someone has probably tamed the cat already so that it likes people. It is either lost or got kicked out of its last home.
