We are about to invest in a refrigerator....I have a question though....what are the pros and cons in your opinion of side by side vs top and bottom ones? Which do you recommend (or have) and why?

I rent but my family has the ones with the freezer on the bottom, they are supposed to have more room.

I am just not used to them, but I'd probably get one.

LOL....
PIC of side by side refrigerator
PIC of top and bottom refrigerator
those are links to the two specifically we are looking at...and as you can see there is a major difference in price, but also in size inside....both of which are important to us.

We don't want one with the freezer on bottom....two reasons...one we have kids and it just wouldn't work that well...they need to be able to get into the refrigerator more, not the freezer. And two they are more expensive....we are wanting to go cheaper then they want for that kind of refrigerator. So we are just looking at side by side or top and bottom (freezer on top) models.

Aha, so you don't just mean a fridge (refrigerator), you mean a fridge freezer. Gotcha!

Sarah,
With a large family, keep in mind the side by side (unless you get a rather large capacity) doesn't really have any more room than a top freezer and it's nearly impossible to get frozen pizzas to fit.

The one I want.

The one I got.

I definitely like the top and bottom models better than side-by-side.

I hate the freezer on the bottom.

We have a fridge in the kitchen, and two freezers in the garage - does that count by side by side, albeit at a distance?!

I would not get the side by side.

We have a bottom freezer one and I love it! I know you don't want that kind though.

we have a separate freezer...the one on our refrigerator right now (which is a very small refrigerator..shorter then I am tall and about my shoulder width apart) is only mainly used for ice trays and a few odds and ends. Well, and every night we use it to cool the kids plates of food if we cook something. We use our big freezer for most things.
btw we aren't getting rid of the one we have, so we will have it for overflow too...we are going to put it outside mostly for bbq stuff and drinks during the summer (and ice pops!!!) so that we don't have to come in so much when we are out in the pool.

of the two that I linked to above though, the side by side is much larger size wise.

Space is the main consideration. If you have a nice big kitchen a side by side will do well. If your kitchen is small like ours is, then a smaller up and down unit with freezer on top is fine.

Another consideration is whether you want a frost free freezer or not. These models are more expensive if cost is a big factor for you.

our kitchen isn't small, but isn't large. a pic of where it would go, but space isn't really an issue...there are no cabinets where it needs to be so nothing like that that we have to fit it into (the shelf doesn't have to stay there either...well, one side doesn't have to....it will be needed outside anyway in a few weeks.).

There is a huge size difference between those two, so knowing the size of your family and that you have a separate freezer, I vote for the side by side.

We have a freezer on top one, and also have a separate freezer. I can never find anything in either of them. The fridge freezer likes to attack people when it is opened. The big freezer is just cavernous. If we were buying new ones, I would get a side by side fridge/freezer and also a standup freezer.

Apparently things don't fit as well in the freezer section of the side by side.

But I'd definitely go with the largest capacity fridge that you can. I'd prefer a bigger top freezer model. Like this one. I'm pretty sure that's the model we had in our last house and I loved it. I like the contoured handle (the kids can still open it on the side).

Also - I don't like the ice/water dispenser - IMO it's a waste of valuable space. And we buy bottled water.

I like the side by side because it is easier to keep the freezer organized. There are some things that are too wide for it though, like some frozen pizzas.

Well, I would vote for the one that is bigger and will hold more. We just bought a new one and I got in a hurry and didn't pay an awful lot of attention to the size. BIG MISTAKE!!! It holds less than our old one and I hate it and am stuck with it for....well, who knows how long???? It's kind of a downer everytime I try to SQUEEZE something in there!!

well luckily we do have the other freezer...so the freezer on the small refrigerator we have now isn't really used tor anything but ice trays (it doesn't have an ice maker, which we want in the next one for sure!!!). Also we are keeping this small one, so overflow can go in it very easily. My mom also pointed out on the side by side model that we then wouldn't have to open it to get to the ice...thus saving energy. If we go with one without the water dispenser then it really isn't a savings of money because we would need to get an under sink water filtration system, which pretty much is about the amount of money difference in the two costs....so either way it's about $1000 for whatever we get. I think though that we are leaning towards the side by side....hubby keeps talking about that one all day (I think he just wants the crushed ice thing....lol. He had knee surgery the other day and he says that the ice cubes in the ice pack don't feel so good...lol)
oh yeah...everyone keeps bringing up pizza's and that they don't fit well in the side by side ones....our daughter is allergic to corn syrup which is in most spaghetti sauces and pizza sauces, so we don't buy stuff like that, we make things ourselves either fresh or sometimes I will make it to freeze....but I can make the size I want or what would fit if I do that.

Even in my little poopy freezer I can still fit pizzas in it...just have to put it in at an angle if they are big...

Manda, are you saying that you have refrigerators without an attached freezer? I've never seen such a thing other than little dorm friges and even they usually have a small "freezer" section to hold a couple ice cube trays.

OK..question....
for those of you that have stainless steel or the look of stainless steel, how easily does it get scratched up? Can you scrub it easily with something without it scratching?
We called around today and Lowe's wil be having a Memorial Day sale, so we are waiting til then to get the refrigerator (plus we found out they do a military discount too!!!)...so we still have a few weeks to decide. I was just thinking last night though, with how much we scrub our refrigerator, would it be better maybe to just get it black (I don't like the look of white) instead of stainless steel? (that also saves some money!!!...if we have extra then we are thinking of putting that towards an under sink disposal)
