Came across this article from Charismamag.com from 2005 re: Paul Cain. As we know, he recently became entangled in the "Lakeland Outpouring," but he evidently had plenty of his own issues to deal with already. Anyway, in reading the article, I came across these quotes from Rick Joyner, Mike Bickle and Jack Deere, who according to the article had provided a platform for Cain and promoted his ministry: "We apologize to the body of Christ for our lack of discernment in promoting Paul's ministry while he had these significant strongholds in his life" Meanwhile, Deere, Bickle and Joyner said they regret giving Cain a platform. "I think our basic mistake was to overlook a lot of serious and obvious warning signs," Joyner told Charisma. Deere agreed. "We all have preached that you never put gifting over character," he said, "but that is what we did for Paul. We would have fired anyone else. The reason we didn't is because of [Cain's] gifting. We let that gifting excuse character." I really don't know much about any of the people involved in this incident, and the purpose of my post isn't to discuss that incident specifically nor to bash the individuals involved. What jumped out at me was the part about letting gifting overshadow character. The same could be said about letting gifting trump sound doctrine. This is an example of what I was referring to in another post regarding the tendency within Pentecostal circles to revere the manifestation of the "power" spiritual gifts as the ultimate expression of God's favor. When that becomes the focus, it's all too easy to overlook character issues or un-Biblical theology as long as we can be dazzled by the smoke and thunder. ("Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!") Jay

("Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!") You nailed it, jay. Everything - including the truth - gets shoved aside for the sake of the 'gift'. What they fail to realize is that satan can also work signs and wonders.
