I am taking next week off from work and want to go somewhere all by myself away from everything for a couple of days. I don't drink, do drugs, gamble, and I am a virginI plan to stay this way all my life ( iIncluding being a virgin because I have no desire for marriage and feel the Lord wants me to remain celibate all my life) That being said I wonder if sin city is still a bad and unsafe place for a single Christian guy to go to by himself. What do you think? Will I enjoy it despite not wanting to partake in anything immoral?

I've never been myself (well, technically not true, but I was about 5 at the time, and remember very little), but a very good friend of mine went there as a high school graduation present by their grandparents. He said that some parts were great (they went to see the Blue Man Group, and found it highly entertaining), but at the same time, there was sexual immorality everywhere. As I'm sure you know, prostitution is legal there, and from what he told me, there are many, many fliers advertising those services handed out, and they are, well, racy, to put it nicely. So, I would advise going elsewhere personally, just to err on the side of caution, but I would not say going there, in and of itself, is sinful.

Not sure what you mean by that specifically, but I would think Vegas is hardly that! Lots of stimuli there and what many of my friends would call "eye candy." What are you looking to "get away" from? And why do you suppose Vegas is called "sin city?" Why not go somewhere that is close to nature with peaceful surroundings? Finally, I would encourage you to ask yourself what you are looking for in this vacation. Do you want to be around lots of people, bright lights, and action. Or do you want to be in a quiet, contemplative environment surrounded by nature's beauty? Vegas seems to be the kind of place people go to in order to disobey their conscience. Thus the popular saying "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas." Heavendweller

I was in Vegas a couple of years ago. I didn't find it too hard to avoid the objectionable stuff. Overall, I found it too crowded for my liking. I am not a big gambler, so it didn't hold a lot of appeal to me. I would go back again if someone paid me to (i.e. for work) but not if I had to pay my own way.

It is extremely hard to corrupt me and I'm posiive Vegas will not influnce my thinking or make m do something that I know is wrong. The only problem that I have with it is that I will be in the presence of too much sin and corruption (I am not talking about sinners because Jesus sent time with sinners...I am talking sin). I guess it will be an opportunity for me to witness to others. If people ask me why I am no partaking in the things that most there do, I can always use that opportunity to tell them why.

I went to Vegas last month. It was a five day trip. I returned home uncorrupted. The lights are fantastic and the buildings are beautiful. I walked around a lot and just looked at the sights. I think everyone should go at least once. I have been there and have no need to go back.

Hmm. I've been to Vegas a couple of times (it was the halfway point between where we lived and our relatives in California, and a really cheap place to stay, growing up). There are some cool things you can see, like Hoover Dam. But, really, if you want to spend an entire week somewhere by yourself, I think you're going to find Vegas a little, well, boring, if you're not willing to participate in the general, well, debauchery. There's only so many times you can ride the bus down the strip surrounded by people who are drunk and/or complaining about how much money they've gambled away (or being happy about how little money they've gambled away...) before the flashy lights get boring. And keep in mind we never stayed there more than a day, and I was bored. Yeah. I would suggest somewhere like Yellowstone if you want to be quiet and alone with God's majesty. I would suggest if you want to be a witness to people, maybe you could sign up for a week to help out with an aid organization... they could really use more Christians ministering to the hurting people hit by floods right now.

I went to Vegas within the first year of becoming a Christian. My heart grieved. I was constantly and sliently praying for people I saw. I definetly felt like I was in Sin City, I was more than ready to go home after 2 days. However, it was an eye opening experience. It helped me to be thankful for my home and all things holy. And like someone else said, there is a lot interesting site seeing and walking around to do.

Leanboy, have you considered a cruise? Another cheaper vacation idea, meals and shows are included. I think it would be a good vacation for a single person. You could socialize if you want but, also go into your cabin if you want more reflective time. A good beach always clears my head.

Should I go to Vegas? 1. If you gamble, would you lose more than 5-10 dollars per hour (a plausible rate for entertainment)? 2. Would your going be to observe the attractions or to participate in them? 3. Would your going or participating be seen as an endorsement that could have an ill-efffect on someone else? 4. Do you have any vulnerabilities that might be more easily exploited in that environment? 5. Would your going produce any sort of edification or enrichment? When you consider that every action taken by a Christian should be considered in light of; 1. Does this harm me or another? 2. Will the Lord be glorified by this? If you want to get away to rest, you may want to consider something in nature. Most state and national parks can be very crowed this time of year, but there are many national forests that can offer solitude and natural beauty.

We go to Las Vegas a couple of times a year to see family. We don't want to put them out so we stay in a hotel during our visit. I can assure you no one will be asking you why you aren't "partaking" of the many vices in the city.

As the Holy Scriptures say, "Do all that you do to the glory of God." Your post has a clear, concise message that reminds us that we, as Christians, though we be in the world, are not of it. Too many in this age of compromise have a muddied message that cheapens grace and makes a mockery of living our lives holy unto God. One day we will give an account to our Lord Jesus for what we have done in the body. We should long to hear from Him "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Master." I think just like any place, there are things one can do without falling into sin, how with that said, is it a good idea to choose Las Vegas in particular? Probably not, but then again how many clean things are in L.A. as well? So it can be relative. BTW, on prostitution being legal in Las Vegas, that is a misnomer, while it is legal in the State, it is not legal within the city limits at all.

I don't believe anyone is going to notice what you do or don't do. Most people who go to Vegas are not going to watch what other tourist do. When my husband and son visit they are never asked why they don't drink, gamble or visit the prositututes. In fact some places are angry with them because most of these places make money off those things. So the people who work there are not going to be impressed by your non-involvement.

My mother went to Vegas once because my dad was in a fishing tournament nearby - whatever that big lake is . . . ?? Anyway, they had all kinds of activities for the wives - shopping, Hoover dam, shows, etc. Just seeing the spectacle that is each hotel was a lot of fun for her! And my mother was a total tea-totaller! She never drank, gambled, etc. She loved Vegas which really surprised me. She did get her purse and wallet stolen - which had her SSN card in it. But she really enjoyed it otherwise. My dh wants to go to Vegas and as soon as we have a chance and some time and cash to blow, we'll go. He's always wanted to see Blue Man Group but we saw them when they came to our town recently. He gambles some, with a plan - decides what his fun money is and spends just that. To me, it's no different than paying to play the games at the fair - and, frankly, my dh loses a lot more money at the fair!! But it totally holds no interest for me at all. I'm told I could find plenty to interest me - shopping maybe!! But I think the crowds and bright lights and noise will wear on me really quickly. NYC was really just overstimulating for this country girl! We'll see. I think it all depends on what your idea of a relaxing escape happens to be. A cruise isn't a bad idea. I can think of lots of things I'd rather do. But if there are things to see and do there you think you'd enjoy, go for it.

My wife and I don't gamble and we went to Vegas. Walked through the casino to get to places. Went on tours of vegas, red rock canyon and Hoover damn. Took in a couple of Cirque du Soleil shows and even rode the NYNY rollercoaster. Actually there was a lot that we did during the week we were there. A childhood friend(lives in Vegas) of mine was surprised that we a lot of things that did not involved gambling. He always said that Vegas was only good for gambling and sex. We actually had a great time. I will admit I played a slot one time because I never did it before and when I won $5 dollars on my 1st try my wife instantly cashed me out.

Cirque du Soleil is definitely worth seeing. We saw the one in Orlando.

I like Vegas. Its not for everyone, but if you wanted to go for a weekend there is enough shopping, restaurants and shows if you did not gamble. They have a marathon / half marathon in december too in which you can run the strip with Elvis. LOL

Thanks for all the concerns and advice folks. I made my reervations already on Satuday night. I have a lot of friends (including Christian ones) who have been there and loved it. I only want to do some sight seeing and have a change of scnery for a few days. As for witnessing, I am aware that people will be too busy to even know I am there or what I am doing but you never know........you could get the odd sociable person at the hotel swimming pool who may start convesing with me and asking questions. \ When all is said and done, I actually trust that I am able to hold on to my values more given that I am going by myself. Had I gone with my buddies, I may not know what to expect.
