Hey I wanted to discuss sleep paralysis. For those of you who are unfamilar with it it's when you wake up(you're in between sleep and waking up). Your body is paralyzed. The only thing you can move are your eyes and often, not always you see illusions. It came be anything such as weird objects, aliens, demonic creatures, people, etc. Often times sleep paralysis is very scary. It usually lasts 2 minutes or less.

Yep, I have had that happen to me from time to time, always pray it never happens again to!! Very unnerving, can hear whats going on around me but can't open my eyes or move my body I just start praying to Jesus and its over in a minute. I have never seen illusions though! Man, see a demon and can't run, yuk!!

I usually experience this once every week or two. I looked it up, if I remember correctly...what I read said that you are only supposed to have it a few times in your lifetime. I could be wrong about that, take it with a grain of salt. It's not fun, I've had these "illusions" you speak of. One of the last few times I had it, felt like I was lying there for much longer than two minutes. I was just screaming inside of my head, "Wake up!!!" At the most, it feels like my fingers might twitch. Nice way to wake up feeling exhausted. I'm schizophrenic, I've always wondered if my frequent experience with sleep paralysis had something to do with that. I can't remember if I've ever looked up the connection.

I think these illusions or experiences are much more than sleep paralysis. I can never get over my experience back in 2003 when a demonic figure or alien came in my room. It felt so real. It stuck a needle in my back. It was like 7ft tall and wore a black robe.

I had this (without hallucinations) a few times when I was younger and under a ot of stress and had very inconsistent sleep schedule. I also at that time had several instinces where I would be asleep and having a (very vivid) nightmare, know it was a dream, but be unable to wake up. These experiences have been found to be most common in teens/young adults-- that is the good news, because you typically grow out of it!! Which could have something to do with brain development or could just be because teens tend to have lousy sleep patterns. The other problem is it can make you afraid to sleep... which further disrupts your sleep pattern, which makes it more likely to occur! Tara P

Well i'm 40 years old, and it has only been a few months since the last time it happened! It did start in my early twenties though. Someone once told me that it was because my body was tired but my mind was alert, and i should do puzzles or something like that to exercise my mind before going to bed. Don't know that their is any truth to that though.

I think it is more that your body is over-tired and your brain thinks it is time to get up. I htink staying up longer to do puzzles, whatever, would just make you more tired. Do you have problems with insomnia, sleep apnea, have a poor sleep schedule, etc? Tara P

I use to have insomnia from time to time, not in a while though. My wife seems to think I may have sleep apnea cause I snore loud and wake myself(and her) up, but I'm not overweight, which is the biggest factor for sleep apnea, atleast thats what the Doc says. I'm over the road truck driver so I don't have normal sleep pattern, I generally sleep at night but not always, hardly ever see more than 6 hrs at a time.

That makes perfect sense, then. If you had the opportunity to get a regular sleep pattern (not just number of hours, but the same hours every night) it would probably go away. People can snore without sleep apnea. Tara P

It's common, scary for many, but not demons, alien abductions or anything so dramatic. Hypnagogia LINK

I had something like this happen to me once, while I was in college, but I'm not sure if it was the same thing. At the time, I attributed it to allergies. I was dreaming that I was lying on my back on a thing like a tire, with my head and legs down and my body arched, and I couldn't move out of that position or even get my breath. I kept wanting to get my head up. It was over quickly, but it scared me because I couldn't breathe.

No, not the same thing, what I experience is not a dream. My mind is awake and alert to what is going on around me but my body will not move. I have had dreams that I knew I was dreaming but could not wake up, not the same thing as "sleep paralysis".

I had this happen to my quite frequently as a teenager and maybe a few times in my early 20s. I also used to see things, but I don't remember what I saw anymore. It felt like a presence was in the room, though. For me, it always happened in the middle of the day. When I was in high school I used to skip lunch and go to the library and nap for 40 minutes. It happened to me a lot during this time. The only time I ever actually felt scared from it was once in my 20s when I was sleeping on the couch with my baby daughter sleeping on my chest. I think that was the last time it ever happened.

I have narcolepsy, and it happens. It is scary, and started happening in my teens.
