I have never been to a Southern Baptist church but, I am thinking of checking one out. Does this church/denom tend to sing older hymns and gospel music? I prefer Chris Tomblin type worship music, just wondering.

SBC's operate independently and it all depends onthe church and more to the point the Music Minister. The SBC I attended used the old hymnal and Southern Gospel. The one My bother in Law attended was contemporary.

Yeah, all SBC's choose their own music styles. So it'll depend on the individual church. My church is a mix of hymns and chorus's, but I know of some that are all hymns, and others that are all contemporary.

I've been a Southern Baptist ever since I was saved. Everyone is right, it all depends on the music minister and the pastor. At the churches I have attended, they would always get together during the week and decide which songs to use. Most of the time, it is a mix between old hymns and contemporary. The reason for that is they want to appeal to both the older and younger crowds. The hymns are for the older folks, who generally are more consistant with tithing, while the contemporary is aimed at the younger folks in order to get them in to hear the gospel.

We use the Baptist Hymnal. It is mostly traditional style hymns. I would guess that a lot of SB churches use this hymnal.

I've been in Southern Baptist church staff ministry for the past 22 years as Minister of Music and combination and now becoming a Pastor. I would echo what most others have said - you cannot tell by the handle of Southern Baptist what type of music is done inside. You just go and check 'em out and see. The spectrum is very wide - from very high church to traditional hymns to praise & Worship to Gen X contemporary and all combinations in between.

Yep. Their all shootin' straight. Our church does what is called a "blended" service. Which means that we sing Hymns, Choruses and Gospel songs in all of our main weekend worship services. But there are all kinds of SBC churches. Spiritually, musically and theologically. You should try one. Find one that is where God is leading you. PJ

Our church has a blended service, but there are some in our area that have both "traditional" services and "contemporary" services...either they have both on Sunday Morning or one on Saturday Night and the other on Sunday Morning.
