I'd like to start, just a fun topic on SGM dress. Since 1994 when I first seen the Kingsmen, I have seen them in Suits, Matching Suits, Slacks and Button up shirts, and Slacks and Matching Polo shirts.
What is everyone's opinion on how groups out to look. Personally, I think that suit and tie too formal, too hot, and seems to me would be very hard to keep clean and have places for them on an extended tour.
My favorite look for the Kingsmen was when I saw them at Dollywood with matching slacks and matching polos. Nice look, and I'm sure very cool for the singers.

I think whatever is comfortable for them. I think in a church service setting the suits might be more appropriate but in a general concert setting I think they should have as relaxed of a dress code as the folks listening! JHO!

I think the dress depends on the enviornment and what the crowd expects to see and what the others on the program are wearing. I also agree that comfort should be considered but often times this can not be done as comfort is not always what is acceptable. For example one mat attend an outdoor concert in a casual setting and some in attendance may be in shorts but I seriously doubt that some concert goers would feel it acceptable for the SG performers to appear on stage in shorts. Last year I went to Bryson City (outdoor sing) and it was on the 4th of July....very hot and there were those in attendance wearing shorts and casual attire but the groups sang in suits. Again I think comfort should be the consideration but it is not always the option.

To me it's up to the group and the venue. A necktie or suit is not going to change the message but in a church or climate controlled indoor stage it's nice to see groups dressed up. In an outdoor situation dressing down a little is fine. Nice polos and slacks is fine.

It could be taken to an extreme and distracting from the message though. I freely admit that I'd be distracted from the message by a quartet showing up to an outdoor summertime concert in cutoffs, tanktops, and flip flops.

Now try to get the image of your favorite quartet dressed on stage like that out of your head!

I like the singers to dress a little bit better than the crowd, which is not a particularly high standard, at least when I'm in the crowd.

Ah yes but would the cutoffs, tanktop and flip flops change the message in the song or merely the attitude of those waiting to receive it? I believe God can use anyone and He does not care how the person is dressed but only that the one is willing to share His message. Now I do agree that cutoffs and tanktop and flip flops is a bit extreme but let's say polo shirt, nice dress shorts and dress sandals......would that present a different image and change the message or could that somehow be ok? I do not believe clothes give the message but rather God does.

I have always been far more interested in how the artists walks when they are not on stage than what they wear on stage.

Dress should depend on the enviorment and place of singing. Don't like to see groups have to sing in suits in an outside venue on the 4th of July when its 100*. It just makes me hotter. Groups look great in casual dress inside venues also. Kingdom Heirs always look nice at Dollywood. They are not in suits but in casual clothing which is appropriate for the venue.

Amen! Amen!

Love that thought....

However, I will say that we totally use the rule that most have stated here. We dress according to the venue, circumstances, etc....

Some days we dress alike......some days we don't......just depends on where we're going and what the circumstances are. Sometimes we're casual and sometimes dressy.

Does that include their walk in flip flops
I agree with you GospelProducer, that is far more important.

I'll opt for appearance and comfort over "style" any day myself. But then I'm old enough that no one cares if I'm in style or not any way.

It's easier to take someone in a suit more seriously than someone in slacks and a polo (or cutoffs and a tank top!) suits give an air of authority, IMO, and we all know that God's Word has great authority! Now I'm not saying that every group ought to wear suits all the time, but imagine if you will, that you are a lost person coming to an SG concert for the first time....would you be more impressed in the difference from the world by the men on the stage wearing suits or in casual attire? I just think dressing up gives the Word a little more power.

I don't think there's anything we can do as humans to "give the Word more power." The Word is the Word, whether it's given by somebody dressed to the nines in the finest suits money can buy, or a vagabond street musician with tattered clothes and a pawn shop guitar.

But that's just me.....

We travel most of the time in NC, Va and SC. We have for years and do around 70 to 80 dates a year. I can tell you from our experience that when we are in churches that most of them like it when we wear suits.

Maybe so, but there is an awful lot we can do to distract from the Word and get in the way.

If one is comfortable in a suit fine. If one is comfortable in casual pants and a polo or button down fine also. Personally I hate ties around my neck but when you have a neck as thick as mine you don't like being choked. So I don't wear 'em. I don't think wearing a suit gives anymore credit to God's message at least it didn't when I was in the world. And sometimes a suit seemed to give some folks a little more holier than you effect on me. I said it before if they aint no Holy Ghost in the singer they aint no good

Wow, a lot of good opinions here. I really didnt know when I started the thread if anyone would care to post on this topic. I think its a fun topic though, and really appreicate everyone's participation.

I totally agree that the "walk" is far more important tht the talk. Nothing hurts worse than to see a Christian singer or preacher involved in the wrong kind of things.

On the tie issue, I hate them. I never wear ties to church. I never seen the big deal about ties. My grandpa is a Baptist preacher and his ties usually dont last too awfully long, or his jacket for that matter!!
I think in general they make people look stiff, especially big guys like me!!! I really like the new looks that I have seen where even inside groups will wear a jacket and button up shirt with no tie. I think it is a nice compromise between formal and casual.
I wouldnt mind a group that didnt wear suits in church honestly. There is a local Baptist pastor in my hometown that wears a sweatervest over a button up shirt with no tie, or a nice pair of pants and a polo shirt.
He is very neatly dressed, and seems very comfortable and very approachable.

I admit, I like to see a man in a suit! (that and my reason in my first post). I think guys look GREAT in suits!! But then, I don't have to wear them....

Yes, the walk is the most important, but I believe people look for leadership, and anyone in a suit represents, in their mind, leadership (at least it does for me.) I think that it CAN cause a holier that thou attitude both in perception of the listener and in the one who is wearing it, but it doesn't have to. You CAN be humble and wear a suit. You CAN also be holier-than-thou in cutoffs and a tee.

Edited to add second paragraph.

I agree people do look for leadership, but let's not forget, Christ looked just like everyone else. He had to be pointed out to the mob. The Sanhedrin wore the nice stuff!! Leadership and strength come from within.

Amen to both of these statements!

I like everyone's opinion here...we all have one and yet we can discuss this without getting ugly!
