We had the opportunity to make a short trip across the Ohio River and catch Southern Sound in concert at Sturgis, KY, this evening. We had only seen them one time before, and that was a few years ago. Only the lead singer, Ben Harris, and baritone, Trevor Haley are still with the group from the time we saw them before. They have only gotten better. They pride themselves in singing traditional SG music, in the traditional quartet way, complete with matching suits, shirts, and ties, great harmony, some minor on-stage antics, and an overall smooth sound from 4 men and a piano player (with a little help from soundtracks). They achieve their mission well. We thoroughly enjoyed tonite's concert. Their tenor, Mike Young, did an excellent job with the high harmonies and tenor leads. He is smooth and high without being shrill. Their bass singer, Alan Brewster, compares favorably with most other basses in the genre today. He is smooth, low, and equally good on providing the lowest harmony or taking a bass lead, which he did on several songs tonite. Trevor just keeps getting better, and Ben has the classic lead singer part nailed. Their keyboard player, Barry Patrick, was also very impressive. He even introduced a new instrument to SG (for me, anyway) a kazoo, on one of their songs. (They had kazoos at their product table.) I did not try to keep track of a playlist, as I find it hard to write down every song and still enjoy the concert to the max, but some of the highlights were: "Do Not Pass Me By" (done only with the singers and the piano, without any added track), "Lonesome Road", done extremely well by Alan, "How Great Thou Art", featuring Trevor in his best "Elvis" voice, and their closing song, a request from an audience member, "What a Morning", featuring Ben. It was an evening of good singing and a good Christian spirit. I also introduced myself to Ben, who is an occasional poster on these forums, and talked with Trevor and Barry. If you get the chance to see them in your area, and if you like traditional 4-part harmony quartet singing, by all means go see them. You will be blessed. I posted this as a new thread to give others a chance to comment on this quartet, since there has not been very much posted about them on these forums.

Thanks for the kind words Bill. It was great meeting you, I only wish we had more time to visit a bit. I would like to invite everyone to Grand Ole Gospel Reunion in August. It is a hoot for sure. And please be sure to be at NQC on Monday night this year. This will be our 3rd year appearing there. We really need to support these wonderful events in Southern Gospel Music.

Is Alan Brewster from the Fort Oglethorpe, Area? I think I saw them at Parkway Baptist Temple several months ago.
