Is it true that if we can wait 15 minutes in the midst of any sinful temptation and remain calm and not give in that the temptation slowly fades and is easier to resist?... I think this is primarily a food analogy, but could possibly be applied to moral temptatoin as well?... In the food analogy, people who crave ice-cream will supposedly find it easier to resist and the temptation go away if they can wait 15 minutes and not give in to it..... Perhaps the same is true with ....buying something at mall?.....getting angry at someone?......sexual temptation........? Or was it a 10 minute rule....30 minute.....I don't remember, but it was something like 15 minutes.

That is a new approach to me. Scripture tells us that; (1Co 10:13) There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. And; (2Co 10:5) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; and; (Luk 6:46) And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? I just don't see a lot of elapsed time being presented in Scripture. Thanks RC

The instant we step out of dependence upon Jesus, we step into sin. And the way out of sin is always the same, to step back into dependence upon Jesus; who then leads us through His indwelling Spirit. Galatians 5:16 "So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature." Peace

ORIGINAL: solomonsprayer Is it true that if we can wait 15 minutes in the midst of any sinful temptation and remain calm and not give in that the temptation slowly fades and is easier to resist?... It`s the "BIBLE RULE" and temptation. When Jesus was confronted with temptation in the desert by the devil in Matt.4:1-11 He used Scripture to defend Himself. In Matt4:4+7+10 Jesus quoted Scripture to Satan by saying "It is written". Jesus quoted Old Testament Scripture to the devil. He did not allow any time to elapse. Time may give the devil a chance to play with your mind even more. You may need time to think about some Scripture verses to defend yourself with, or just a little time to come to your senses.

Rather then the '15 minute rule' I try to use the 'deep breath' method. By and large, most decisions are in one's DNA either personality, character(or lack there of) or track record.

You cannot measure temptation with time or a ruler. Temptation comes through our senses or our own thoughts. If someone is able to control their thoughts when temptation is first realized, squashing that temptation immediately is the remedy. If you are unable to do so almost instantly, 15 minutes will make no difference. We are to flee the very presence of evil. You don't wait around 5, 10, or 15 minutes. It would be like playing with fire.

buying something at mall?..... I know this works in regard to my spending. If I walk away, go home, the desire goes away and my money is NOT spent on the needless item. Much of what we 'need' is because we see it and are tempted. Going home to ponder the decision is the way the Lord has led me and this has averted many needless purchases. . . . although I came home with needless purchases yesterday.
