HARTFORD, Conn. - A 78-year-old man is tossed like a rag doll by a hit-and-run driver and lies motionless on a busy city street as car after car goes by. Pedestrians gawk but do nothing. One driver stops briefly but then pulls back into traffic. A man on a scooter slowly circles the victim before zipping away.

I saw this and was completely disgusted. How could anyone in their right mind ignore this person and act as if nothing happened.

Luke 10:30-35 came to mind when I read this. I guess no one wanted to be the "Good Samaritan".

This Scripture came to mind as well:
"Because iniquity will be multiplied, the love of many will grow cold." Matthew 24:12

I wonder why no one helped? That is sad. I have heard of plenty of stories where people stop and help so this really surpirses me in a sad way.

I just saw this and I'm horrified. I've actually been present for accidents several times when everyone in the vicinity jumped in to help, so I'm completely shocked that not one person helped this man--or even called 911!

I hope that, despite it's commonality, I will never cease to be shocked by the coldheartedness of mankind.

I find it appalling and I can't understand the mentality. Have we really become this calloused?

I was involved in an accident where I was hit by a pickup while riding my bicycle and I continue to thank God that several people stopped to render aid and call 911.

If you notice the car that hit him appears to have swerved into the wrong lane either to go around traffic or to intentionally hit the man. Also, it appears that the car that hit him was either being followed or chased by another car.

Maybe shocked is not the best word.

Broken, perhaps.

God created the world and it was GOOD, not evil. This isn't the way "it's supposed to be". This world is the way we humans have made it through our sin. Or is it, in your opinion, God's will that we try to kill each other?

It seems kind of cold-hearted in itself to make that kind of a statement.

I did see this and it is sad but a major commentary on our world today. No one wants to help out their fellow man.

It's just another example of our depravity.

It brings back memories. A hit and run happened right in front of me once. I stopped my car a bit diagonally just behind her so that other vehicles would have to go completely around us. It was a crazy moment that I'll never forget.

As I went to her others started coming too, and then I realized--has anyone called 911? No--this was before cell phones. So I ran across the street and called.

Anyway, it's such a strange thing to happen, and it sticks with you.

I'm thinking those who saw that man in the street and did nothing will always remember seeing him.

I'm really surprised as well. If he were being mugged, it would at least make sense that people would be scared. Some people would be too skeemish because of the blood, etc., but I've seen people coming to the aid of accident victims without exception (doesn't mean everybody, but sveral in a groups would). I was run off the road by a guy on his way to buy (likely more) beer a few years back. I meant down an embankment and my car struck a tree. There was somebody at my car before I could get out the first expletive.

Or, maybe it's a Northern/urban thing.

I work in Hartford where this happened. This city is such a cesspool of crime. This does not surprise me.
There are multiple shootings/stabbings EVERY day.

The mayor is a former gang leader and the chief of police is completely incompetent. In addition, the police are hindered because the city has a "no snitch" rule.

They threatened to close the city library because it was filled with drug dealing, people having sex in the bathrooms and homeless loitering. THis after a recent 42 MILLION dollar expansion

BTW, the poor man is paralyzed

Soxfan, I was wondering if this was a "bad " nighborhood or not. There are a few Chicago neighborhoods that are like this. Many hit and runs for fear of geting beaten to death.

My anger is aimed at the people who hit him. But I'm not shocked or surprised at the people just standing around watching. To me, its pretty much typical human behavior.
My over-all response is "...welcome to real life."

If you knew that neighborhood, you would know why no one came to help. As far as they knew, it could have been a gang hit and they wanted no part of it

Yeah, but a hit on a very old man?? So sad.

But I will admit, there is one neighborhood in our city where I could not safely stop and get out of the car even if I wanted to help. But I would call 911 ASAP.
It makes a little more sense knowing it's a very dangerous area.

When my husband flipped his car a few years ago, on a rural road, the 3 cars that were behind him and saw the accident all stopped immediately to help. Some of the people who saw the accident and hurried to help were actually crying, they were so worried for dh and our son.

I agree I once lived in a city with neighborhoods like this, but that shouldn't stop anyone from at least calling 911.

I guess what disturbed me the most is that some of the people took the time to walk out to the man and then still do nothing. It just seems sort of sadistic to me that someone would be willing to walk up to an injured person to see how bad they look and then simply walk away like the person isn't even there.

Where I live this isn't "typical human behavior".

I saw this one special on child abductions. This man was an actor and he was (in act ok'd by police and her parents of course} Was told to yell. "You're not my daddy". It was surprising that so many people had this hut-duh behavior didn't help or see if they could help. Just walked right on by. Suppose this had been a real kidnapping. Would they have said? Had I done this she would be alive..
