Is Jesus suggesting He is more interested in us being daily dependant upon Him rather than having it all resolved in advance? Shouldn't finances be planned and to work toward retirement in a systematic way

I plainly think that it is as said, yet our daily bread is our need, and our need is Christ Daily. So Christ is our bread. Take of this cup, and eat of this bread. Symbolic, meaning him and the new covenant. His shed blood and his broken body for us. ineffable love

Surely He does want us to be daily dependent on Him---needing Him more than anything because He is LIFE and He is our life. So each day He wants us to come to Him to be satisfied. He is the true bread. He is the one we are to eat and fill ourselves on. Are we to be good stewards and use our resources wisely? Absolutely. And if we are dependent on Him, we will be. First things first. Seek ye first Jesus and all else will follow. Or as Augustine said love God and do as you please.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said the poor in spirit are the blessed ones. We think of poor as someone who has things but just gets by. The poor here is that if they didn't get what they needed they would die. In terms of daily bread, I would go back to the mana of the OT. Just enough for the day. Try and gather too much and it rots.

Shouldn't finances be planned and to work toward retirement in a systematic way There's nothing wrong with this. The problem comes when we start putting our faith in our retirement funds instead of in Him. There's a good passage in James which addresses this subject, chapter 4, verses 13-15. God has no problem with us making plans, as long as He is at the center of them, and we leave enough room for Him to change them, if He wants to.

This harkens back to the time when we were in the wilderness, we were dependant on Adonai for our daily bread(manna). Those who gathered little had no lack and those who gathered much had no excess, except those who attempted to hord it. The latter for their efforts got a bucket of worms. Even though Adonai provided all we needed on a daily basis and a double portion on the sixth day for that day and Shabbat, we grumbled. Therefore, I would say Yeshua is telling us to ask Adonai to provide for us what we can handle. He who gathers little has not lack and he who gathers much has no excess. However, we are accountable for what we gather, if we hord what is provided only to consume upon ourselves, we will find nothing but a bucket of worms. On the other hand if we do not gather a double portion to provide for the time of rest, we will starve, for Adonai will not provide for those who do not honor Him.

I think all of these replies are great but also I think God likes to talk with us. He visited with Adam in the garden every morning, when man sinned and we were separated from Him, He devised a Way back to Him so that we could once again have a relationship with Him. It might just be a way to have a DAILY visit once again with him. Let's be honest....if we were self-sufficient, how often would we visit with God? How often do we call or visit our parents? I know this will sound bad but I try to avoid really bad trouble in my life so God doesn't have to "drive" me back to Him! Bad, huh? I don't want Him to have to "get" my attention with a paddle!

It means what it says- for God to provide our daily needs, physical and spiritual. He always has, does and will provide for our needs if we trust Him to. As Christians we must trust in God to provide. If we start to trust in ourselves too much we may decide that we don't need God.
