Has this been the worse televison season ever?

I think so..

With the writer's strike and the four networks viewership down a lot this year (the fifth network may be gone next year because of low viewership)
this has been the worse year of televison. Cable and sattilitte was really the big winners.

What do you all think?

The writers strike surely put a damper on things. I am just now watching the shows in reruns that I didn't watch when they were new because I had lost interest.

I only watch a few shows on the networks anyway since they primarily show those mindless, stupid "reality" shows. The shows I do watch (NCIS, CSI:Vegas, and the Law & Order franchise) were all pretty good this season.

I just think its getting worse every year.

There are some very intelligent shows (Law and Order, House, etc) but the rest of the shows are just dumb.

I agree. There are some shows I try not to miss - but when the strike started and all we saw was reruns I totally lost interest. When the new episodes came out I still had little interest. The only show I watched all season was American Idol. We watched a lot of the history channel, discovery channel and Hallmark this year.

The strike had a major impact on both existing and new series.

Of the new shows this past season, I liked Pushing Daisies, Chuck, and Moonlight. All three were disrupted by the strike. The first two didn't come back after the strike but are renewed; the last one came back after the strike and was canceled.

More and more, our family is watching cable networks in place of the broadcast networks.

The influence of premium cable (HBO, Showtime) with the excessive raunch on air has fallen into the networks, which have now caved to the idea that cable-level raunch works best.

The strike affected viewership, but a big winner is Germany's RTL, which has the top daytime (The Price Is Right) and primetime (American Idol) programmes on US television unaffected by any labour stoppages. RTL will continue to churn new shows this summer, with NBC having the Got Talent franchise for a third season, and bringing back All-Star Family Feud Special for the first time since the 1970's. CBS and RTL will have the return of Password for the first time since 1989, with this the first primetime variant since the 1960's. Monique Coleman and Betty White have been confirmed as two of the panelists who will appear on RTL's 21st-century revival of the Regis Philbin-hosted game. White is the widow of Allen Ludden, who hosted the show in various forms from 1963 until his death.

Bobby,

You and I know the network viewership has dropped so low that they have to copy cable now. CBS has a show that is coming this summer having to do with wifeswapping and affairs that is set in the 70's. And don't forget, the Tiffany Network is going to have IFC fights on Saturdays. I can see CBS reviving Roller Derby now because believe it or not, the networks has ran out of ideas.

The Good Seal of Practice has gone out the window now.

It's not the raunch that made HBO's shows successful, it's the quality of the writing. I haven't seen a network show come close to the Sopranos or Deadwood.

Dan, while I didn't get into either...I have a tendancy to agree that quality of writing is at least part of the appeal. I rented the first season one disc of Sopranos a while back and couldn't get past the frequent foul language. However, it certainly had its fans.

I'm really hoping that a slightly-cleaned-up version of The Tudors makes it's way to PBS in the next year or so. The acting and writing are very good; it's just that every episode has one or two scenes I don't want to watch.

This has been the worst season. The writer's strike didn't help and they are having shows that really have no staying power. What has happened to shows such as Perry Mason, Adam -12 etc. It's pretty much the same o same o and nothing original.
